“Maybe, if I can bring my friend, Winnie.”

“Winnie …?”

“The girl with the long black braids.”

He grimaces a little but I glare at him so hard, he quickly says, “Sure, the more, the merrier.”

“So, how do I get that permission?”

“Apply to your head of house.”

“Head of my house?” I had no idea there was such a thing. “And who is the head of my house?”

“Venus? Tristan Kennedy.”

The Prince Charming I’d spotted on my very first day. Little did I know back then how much of a prince he truly was. The dude is treated like royalty in this school, everyone practically bowing and kissing his feet wherever he walks.

“Tristan Kennedy?! I thought it would be a teacher or something.”

“Nope.”

“Shit.

“Yeah,” Andrew says, leaning back in his chair. “A piece of advice, if you want to make your life easy, don’t fall out with the head of your house.”

I tellWinnie that we’re going into Los Magicos on Saturday night with Andrew and his friends. She looks exactly like she did standing outside Trent’s room – half excited, half sick.

“I’ve never been to a bar before.”

“Ha,” I punch the air.

“What?” she says, glancing at me.

“Finally, something that you haven’t done either.”

“If we get caught my parents will actually skin me alive.”

“We won’t get found out. Andrew says they go to that bar all the time. Besides, we have something Andrew doesn’t. Makeup.”

Winnie’s eyes light up. “You’ll let me do your makeup? I’ve been dying to lay my hands on you from the moment you stepped through our dorm door.” I tilt my head. “Wait, no, not like that, I mean, I want to give you a makeover.”

“Hmmm.”

“Pleeeeaaase,” she begs, linking her hands together.

“If you promise not to turn me into a bouncing bunny.”

“Eww, no. Although you will have to borrow some of my clothes. Jeans and hoodies won’t cut it.”

“Your clothes will be too long on me. I’ll look like a walking scarecrow,” I protest.

She bumps her shoulder against mine. “Magic, remember, Rhi.”

Yep, magic. I was only permitted to use it at home in cases of emergency, when we really had to. My aunt was worried too much magic would light up the sky above our house like a firework display and have the town folk talking. I’m not used to being able to use my magic whenever I like. It’s going to take some getting used to.

“Andrew says we have to seek out permission from our head of house to go into Los Magicos.”
