Wait.
The snowstorm!
Damn, my mind must be a mess if I hadn’t even thought about the snowstorm yet. So much depended on it!
I threw back the covers, jumped out of bed, and… immediately regretted my actions. Although there was a soft little sheepskin rug next to my side of the bed, the floor was still fucking cold. Actually, not just the floor but the air, too. As if we’d slept with the window open. My teeth were chattering and goosebumps rapidly spread all over my body. But I powered on and crossed the few feet to the window, even though the floorboards felt like they’d been in the freezer overnight. However, checking if the snowstorm had hit us as hard as had been predicted was more important than my temporary comfort.
I was hoping for heaps and heaps of snow, but… there weren’t.
The sun rising behind the mountains illuminated the morning sky in a beautiful pinkish-orange light. The first sunbeams hitting the white, powdered snow made it glisten and sparkle like a myriad of tiny diamonds, but there was hardly any more snow than yesterday evening.
Definitely not enough to be even close to snowed in. A snowplow would probably come by within the next hour or two and clear the road. Then all the tourists would have an easy journey to the ski resort that was about five miles up the road.
Sighing, I turned away from the incredible view and dropped to the bed.
I couldn’t shake the pang of disappointment in my chest, nor the heavy sinking feeling in my gut. The weather app had told me about the snowstorm for days. How was it possible for a forecast to be so incredibly wrong in this day and age? I’d relied on them!
I liked Will. More than liked. And this was supposed to be my chance to get close to him. This was supposed to be a crazy event that brought us together and made him realize I wasn’t just a friend or his best friend’s little sister’s best friend.
But my plan had failed. Utterly and completely.
I was alone up here, and god only knew where Will was.
I wanted to cry — and if I didn’t stop thinking about this whole disaster, I would. So I did the only sensible thing I could: I pulled myself together. I dressed in a pair of jeans, socks, and a big sweater. I’d spent yesterday freezing my butt off in a long-sleeved shirt that Will hadn’t even noticed; I’d be smarter today.
As soon as I stepped into the hallway, I was greeted by warm air and the heavenly smell of coffee.
Coffee!
My stomach growled in anticipation, even though another sinking feeling settled in my gut. Will hadn’t even waited for me to have breakfast together.
Why would he? We weren’t a couple, and apparently, we weren’t even good enough friends to wait to share his meal with.
Sighing again, I went downstairs and started looking around. There was a new fire crackling in the fireplace, and Will had obviously been busy this morning. All the bigger boxes that had been filled with Christmas decorations had been unpacked. So now, the individual pieces and smaller boxes were spread neatly on the floor, garland and fairy lights were hanging over the back of the couch, and Christmas stockings and hats were lying on the coffee table.
Damn, Will had to have been up for hours.
What time was it, anyway?
And, more importantly, where was Will?
“Good morning,” he greeted from behind me.
Found him.
“Hey, good morning. Have you been awake for long?” I shoved all the negative feelings swirling inside of me to the side and put on a cheerful smile. It wasn’t really that hard. Seeing Will made me smile.
“For a while now.” He shrugged and pushed his glasses back to their place. “I couldn’t lie still anymore.”
“Oh. You could’ve woken me up. I rarely bite.” I winked at him before pushing past him into the kitchen, following the heavenly aroma of coffee.
“But you looked so peaceful while sleeping.” I heard his footsteps following along. “I mean, this is a vacation, after all, so you should be able to sleep in if you want to. But… I have to admit, I probably would’ve woken you in a couple of minutes. I’m really hungry.”
“You haven’t eaten yet?” I stopped dead in my tracks, turning my head to Will, who ran straight into me. I didn’t care. My heart was skipping inside my chest just because he’d waited for me to have breakfast.
“No.” Will avoided my eyes, his cheeks turning a light red. “I thought… well… we could have breakfast together and then start the decorating stuff afterward.”
My heart sped up and I was probably grinning like a maniac, but I couldn’t help it. He’d waited for me!
