“That’s what your uncle said too.”

“Oh?” Meghan’s interest flared as she looked between the two of them. “Andwhendid he tell you this?”

Nick busied himself, hoping Corinne didn’t feel the need to share the activities of the night beforedespite his early assurances that he didn’t care if she did.

“Yesterday.”

“Right, the county fair,” Meghan murmured, looking disappointed. “So … why didn’t you bring it in before then?”

“The light wasn’t flashing.”

Meghan blinked once. “So?”

“So, I thought it wasn’t a big deal.”

“What idiot told you that?” Meg asked.

Nick snorted, peeking over the rig to see Corinne’s flush growing a deeper red.

“Just a guy I went out with a few times.”

“Sounds like a tool. You’re not still seeing him, are you?”

Nick pressed the button on the winch, blocking out Corinne’s reply. He didn’t want to hear the answer. Who Corinne McCain dated was none of his concern, no matter how much his gut clenched.

When everything was hooked up and good to go, Meghan scrambled into the cab and took the small foldout seat behind the driver’s seat, leaving the passenger side for Corinne. He supposed that made sense and was the polite thing to do, but having Corinne within touching distance, filling the cabinwith her light and clean fragrance, affected him in ways he didn’t want to be affected.

Because Corinne McCain was absolutely, one hundred percent off-limits as anything other than a member of his sister’s extended family who crossed his path on occasion.

And someone who took it upon herself to wait half the night to give me a ride, no questions asked.

Which made him once again wonder,Why?

When they arrived back at the garage, Nick let Corinne and Meg off at the office and pulled the tow truck around back. After disengaging the vehicle, he grabbed an ODB2 scanner from one of the bays and plugged it in. When it displayed the source of the warning, he scowled.

When he came back to the office, Sean was talking to Corinne. Clearly, he and Nicki had finished “doing inventory.”

“It’s an EVAP issue,” Nick said.

“What does that mean?” Corinne asked.

“It means you most likely have a leak in the fuel vapor system.”

Judging by Corinne’s bemused expression, that didn’t make things any clearer.

“Is that bad?” she asked, blinking those damn wide blue eyes at him.

The words came out with an edge. “Depending on what’s causing it and where it is, you run the risk of a fire every time you start your engine, so, yeah, it’s not good.”

Corinne’s face paled, and Nick felt a small sense of satisfaction.Good.She needed to be more careful. The car pulling a “nuh-uh” on a well-traveled road in the middle of the day was probably the least horrible thing that could have happened.

“Or it could be a faulty gas cap,” Sean said, shooting a WTF glance Nick’s way. “We’ll know more when we take a closer look. Do you need a ride home?”

“That would be great. I’ve got groceries in the back, and I’m not sure they’re going to last much longer in this heat.”

“Nick?” Sean asked expectantly. “You want to take one of the loaners and give Corinne a ride home?”

Tempting, but no. Being in an enclosed vehicle with Corinne McCain twice in as many days was more than enough.
