“I can’t. I need to talk to Nicki about something important.”

Sean’s brows lowered and bunched togetherwhile disappointment flashed briefly across Corinne’s face. Or maybe he’d simply imagined it.

“It’s fine,” she said. “My place isn’t that far. I just need to get my bags out of the back.”

Sean looked at Meghan. “Help Corinne with her bags and give her a ride home.”

Meghan was all over that like white on rice. “You’re letting me drive?”

“I’m making a onetime exception.”

“Can I take the Nova?”

Sean grimaced. “Don’t push it.”

“Right. Challenger it is.” Meghan was off the chair and out the door before her father changed his mind.

The two women were gone moments later.

Sean exhaled and shook his head, then turned to Nick. “All right. What’s so important?”

CHAPTER FIVE

CORINNE

Corinne hid her disappointment. She’d thought having Nick be the one to show up with the tow truck was a stroke of luck. Despite what she’d said the night before, she wanted to know more about what had happened.

With Meg along, Corinne hadn’t dared bring it up.

A second chance had presented itself when Sean suggested Nick give her a ride home, but Nick had shut that down quickly. Rather vehemently too. It was enough to give a girl a complex.

“Hurry,” Meg coaxed, “before Dad makes me take one of the loaners.”

Corinne and Meg quickly transferred the groceries from the SUV to the trunk of the Challenger and were on their way. It took only a few minutes to get to Corinne’s apartment. Meghan helped her carry her bags inside, which was not necessary, but appreciated all the same.

“Where do you want this stuff?” Meghan asked.

“Lay it out on the island, please,” Corinne said. “I’ll be using most of it right away. Food prep day.”

Meghan set the bags down and started emptying them. “Can I ask you something?”

“Sure. Shoot.”

“Is something going on between you and my uncle Nick?”

Corinne kept her gaze on the items in her hands and thought about the best way to answer that. In forbidden late-night fantasies? Maybe. But realistically? Not so much.

“Why would you ask that?”

The girl shrugged. “Nothing. Just thought I sensed a vibe.”

A vibe?

“You’re starting to sound like your aunt Maggie,” Corinne said.

“That’s what Dad says,” Meghan answered with a grin. “So, is there?”

“No. Sorry to disappoint.”
