Chapter Fourteen

The alarm woke Mia, and at first, she had no idea where she was. Then it came to her that she needed to check on Jack, make sure he had no repercussions from his concussion.

Wallowing in the warmth of her covers, she revisited the happenings of earlier and found her cheeks fired up and her breathing quicken.

Never before had she ever let a man she’d just met take her to bed and have his way with her. Well… being honest, it had been rather more like the other way around. He’d aroused such needs that she’d seduced him.

Unable to believe her behavior, she tried to make excuses. After all, she’d just lived through the horrible trauma of Jasmine’s death. She’d had to pack up her business, say goodbye to close friends and make a move she wasn’t sure was the right thing for her and Maisie’s future.

Any person suffering so many changes, the ordeal of being on her own to make these decisions, would have grabbed those precious moments of pure pleasure. Right?

Agreeing with her arguments didn’t really make a difference, since she now had to live with the consequences of her unusual actions. She had to face the man she’d seduced.

Thinking to ignore the alarm and hope nothing bad happened, she hugged her pillow and fought with her conscience. Dammit, she couldn’t do it. What if he suffered a relapse or whatever happens when people hit their heads so hard they lose consciousness?

Her inner devil reminded her it might be a bit late to worry about consequences and relapses now… after she’d seduced the poor guy. Just go and get it over with. You care about him; you know you do.

Creeping from her covers, she tiptoed into his room and found him awake.

“I wondered if you were going to come and see if I was alive,” he teased. His voice was deep, husky and her undoing.

“What do you mean?” She crouched on the floor next to him, scared to get any closer. The ambiance still permeated the space, and shockingly, her needs still throbbed. Now that she knew the bliss of his embrace and the joy her body had found; it took all her strength not to perch on top of the poor man once again and lower herself for their pleasure.

“You left me.”

“You fell asleep. I checked. You were simply sleeping, or I wouldn’t have left you.”

“I wanted to hold you.”

“Then, I’m sorry. It would have been nice.” Her heart missed a beat, and she didn’t know what else to say.

He lifted his hand and filtered it through the heavy waves streaming over her shoulders. “You have lovely hair. It’s glowing in the light from the open door.”

“I left the light on in the bathroom and the door open so I’d see where I was going.”

“For Maisie?”

“No, she sleeps like a log and never gets up. I just hate being in strange bedrooms when it’s pure black.”

“See, we have a second thing in common.”

“What’s the first?”

“We both like kissing.” He leaned over and put his mouth on hers, kind of like what she’d done to him earlier.

Loving the taste of him, her body awakened to the memory of his earlier invasion. Pulsations flared in her lower body, and it began to throb. Wanting more, she leaned toward him and let herself float on the waves of desire.

Their kisses ignited. His hands reached for her willing body. He lifted the covers and scooted her inside. She discovered him hard and throbbing as he nudged against her hip. Wriggling so she could be comfy in his arms, she loved the evidence of his obvious need.

“I missed you.”

“Did you? Is what’s happening too soon, Jack? We just met.”

He kissed her nose, looked into her eyes and said, “I feel like I’ve been searching for you since… forever. Now I’ve found you, I don’t ever want to let you go.”

She smiled in relief, but shy and uncertain, she teased him anyway. “I bet you say that to all the girls.”

“No, never. Only you.” His next kiss took all thoughts of conversation from her mind, and she concentrated on how her body came alive and was reacting to having his nakedness wrap around her.
