“Chase,” I gasp as I reenter the room. He has his phone pressed to his ear and holds up a finger for me to wait a minute.

How rude. No one tells me to wait. At least not when I might be going into heat and aren’t at home and able to prepare my nest.

“Ahem,” I whine, bringing my hands to my hips and drawing his attention back to me. His eyes widen, darkening with lust as he realizes I’m standing there butt-naked and dripping wet.

Slick runs down my thighs as his pheromones spike and call to me. Shit. I’m not ready. My heat isn’t due. I need my nest.

At least now I’ve got his attention.

“Take me home,” I demand, tapping my foot against the floor impatiently. “I want to nest before I turn into a knot-starved version of myself.”

“Hold on, Axel,” he says before cupping his hand over the phone. “You’re in heat, Dee?”

“Just about,” I mutter. “And I don’t want to have my heat here. So we need to go.”

“Okay, Axel will come get us now, won’t you, Axel?” he questions, bringing the phone back to his ear. He nods to himselfand hangs up the call. “He’ll be here in about twenty minutes. How about we get dressed and have something to eat while we wait, huh?”

“No,” I snarl. “I’m not hungry. And my dress is too scratchy.”

He nods, approaching me and pulling me against him. His fingers trace patterns along my back in a slow twirling pattern that feels kind of nice while his other hand flicks off a message.

“What about my shirt?”

I consider for a moment as I step back, and he passes it to me for me to try it out. It smells like him, his forest rain scent strong and soothing. But it’s too crisp, too rough against my sensitive skin. Shaking my head, I hand it back and move to the curtains, pulling them closed. The relief is instantaneous. Having a dimly lit space for my heats is one of my key requirements.

“We can figure out clothing soon. Let me get you some breakfast and an electrolyte drink. I may not have experience with a heat, but I know enough that I know it’s likely days before you’ll eat again.”

“Not hungry,” I whine, annoying myself with the sound. “I don’t want anything.”

“Please, Dee? Eat to make your alpha happy?”

“Fine.” It’s a little bit of a low blow for him to pull the alpha card, but I can’t blame him. He’s right. I won’t eat anything they don’t force me to for the next three days at least.

Chase grins, disappearing to fetch the breakfast pastry. I plop myself down on the bed, sulking. The guys have an away game tomorrow. They’re supposed to leave tonight, and I don’t want them to. I want them both to stay and be a part of my heat.

Chase returns with the food just as I’m wiping away a couple of wayward tears.

“Hey,” he says, plopping down on the bed beside me. “What’s wrong?”

“Can you stay? You and Axel? Can you miss the game and stay with me?”

“Axel’s sorting it now, Dee. We won’t leave you.”

Relief washes over me in a flood, enough that some of my irritation subsides and I’m able to stomach a couple of pastries that Chase brought down.

“Chase? Mandy?” Axel's voice sounds about half an hour later from the bottom of the stairs.

“Up here,” Chase calls. “First door on the left.”

“How are you doing, Mally?” he coos as he appears in the doorway a few moments later. “Ready to get home to your nest?”

“Yes.” I stand from the bed. “Let’s go.”

“Hold on,” he growls. “You can’t go like that. I bought you a few things to try.”

That’s when I notice the bag in his hands. It’s from Proud O’s and appears to be overflowing with a variety of different clothing options.

“Pick the least irritating item to wear home, Mandy. I promise to tear it off you the second you’re in your apartment, okay?”
