“Fair enough. But… I’m dying to know what was the last straw?” I kinda whispered. “You can tell me to mind my business, I won’t be offended.”

“Nah,” he shook his head. “I’m not trying to get into it too deep, but he said some slick shit about something… deeply personal, deeply private, deeply nothing to do with him, or the team, none of that. But he decided mid game, Trojans handing us our ass in a frilly basket, everybody already stressed the fuck out, to say something that was… too fucked up for me to let slide. So I didn’t.”

“You know… I love a good standing on business moment myself, so I can’t even blame you,” I said. “And I really hope you do amazing at training camp – how was their season without you?”

He smirked. “I’m not saying it’s because I wasn’t there, but the three seasons before this, Iwasthere, and we atleastmade the finals.”

“Oh they’re missing you bad.”

“I may have heard a little of that from my teammates. But you know… we’ll see. I’m looking forward to proving myself,” he said, heading for the door unprompted. “Appreciate the pep talk, Sunshine.”

I grinned. “Ohhh, I’m notPissytoday?”

“Nah, you’re on a different energy today – good vibes.”

“Don’t get too used to it,” I quipped as I opened the door to see him out. “I punch niggas too.”

His eyes went wide, and I laughed. “That was supposed to be a joke.”

“Hahhahah,” he deadpanned, then grinned, and I just closed the door.

Damn.

“Now,you know I don’t believe that shit for a second, right?”

My mouth dropped in a fake gasp – wait, not fake, just not like…

Okay.

Fake.

It was fake.

I was nowhere near surprised Claire wasn’t buying my “it’s nothing, really”insistence where Calvin was concerned when I barely believed it myself.

As much as I could though, I was enjoying the view from my riverfront home on Denial.

I shook my head, bumping her shoulder with mine as I leaned into her in our booth at Hideaway. “It has barely been a month since the breakup with Hunter. What kind of classy woman of high moral standard would I be if I was already moving on to someone else?” I asked, picking up my lemon drop.

“Okay, first of all, sincewhenwere you trying to bethat?Second… I thought you fucked him on your kitchen counter a few weeks ago?”

I choked on the lemon drop.

“Well, yes,” I admitted, since she already knew all the details anyway. “But like… I’m trying to tighten up.”

“For what?”

“Life,” I laughed. “I don’t know… I just… I feel like, okay… it’s been a month… I’ve gone a week without crying about the breakup… okay, let’s put things back on track.”

Claire nodded. “Including this thing with you and the basketball player.”

“There’s nothing. Why are you and Kae trying so hard to make it athing?”
