“A lot of this is new to you,” Ellen said softly. “So we need to be very careful as you train and gain better control of your new abilities. It’s important that you do not push yourself too much. You must rest tonight. No training at all, even your ability to block others. Do not reduce the circlet’s dampening effect, no matter how much you might itch to do so. The better you follow our instructions, the sooner you will be rid of this temporary crutch. Donotstrain yourself.”
I nodded with a slightly pouty expression. “Yeah, your mate pretty much said the same thing.”
To my shock, Ellen recoiled and looked at me as if I had said something absurd.
“My mate?!” she repeated.
“Yes, Yinric,” I replied with confidence.
“Who?” she asked, confused.
“Yinric Myar, my kinetic trainer,” I replied, now also feeling confused.
She shook her head. “Sorry, but I’ve never even met him. He is new here. And Arafin normally is the one who interacts with specialists in the other disciplines involved in this project.”
“Oh wow!” I whispered, more to myself than for her.
She tilted her head to the side and gave me a slightly baffled inquisitive look. “Why did you assume we were mated?”
“Because you’re soulmates,” I replied in a factual manner.
She recoiled again, a million conflicting emotions coursing through her. Although I could no longer feel them, they were on full display on her expressive face. The professional in her was wondering if my brain was somehow addled. But her personal side seemed both intrigued and shocked by what she perceived as being completely impossible.
“He can’t be. Isn’t he a Raithean?” she countered.
I gave her a stern look. “How is that relevant? Someone’s species does not define whether they can be your soulmate. And in this instance, there’s no question that your souls are in perfect harmony.”
Despite her embarrassment at thus being called out for her silly comment, Ellen was too shocked to respond. She gaped at me for a moment, her wheels spinning.
“So your powers allow you to know when people are soulmates?” she asked carefully at last.
I nodded. “They do.”
She shifted on her feet, a mix of excitement and denial plastered all over her face.
“Did you tell him that you thought we were soulmates?” the doctor asked, a hint of nervousness seeping into her voice.
I realized then that she feared a potential rejection by that male and therefore wanted to keep her expectations very low in case I was wrong. While her doubt made sense, it still stung my pride.
“No, I have not. The topic didn’t come up. I just assumed you were bonded since you are both soulmatesandworking on the same project,” I replied with a shrug.
Ellen ran nervous fingers through her long, dark-brown hair. “I don’t know what to say.”
I gave her an amused look. “To me? Nothing really. But you should go see Yinric. Maybe you can invite him for a coffee under the guise of discussing my case. Then the rest will fall into place.”
The look on her face was hilarious. It took every ounce of my willpower not to burst out laughing. However, her underlying curiosity about the Raithean was what I latched onto. I loved that, despite her misgivings about the accuracy of my statement, she was actually open about looking into its veracity. Her blossoming excitement was contagious. I could grow addicted to stirring such responses in others.
After all, there was no greater feeling in the world than to be surrounded by soulmates reunited.
“Well, if I can go now, I would like to spend a bit of time with my own mate before curfew,” I said teasingly.
That seemed to snap Ellen out of her wandering thoughts. She blushed prettily before nodding.
“I just need to draw another blood sample and download the data from your circlet, then I will call your mate so that she can escort you to her quarters.”
My heart leapt. “Her quarters?!” I repeated.
It was her turn to give me an amused smile. “You’re stable enough to be able to return to a more normal environment. Noone likes being cooped up in the medical bay. So long as you continue to follow the medical instructions we provided, things should run smoothly.”
