I opened my eyes to see Shaydon. “Okay.”

He walked into the room and knelt beside me and pulled me into a hug. “Whatever you need me to do, I will. I get how much you love him. So, as a friend, I’m here.”

“Thank you.”

He nodded, then kissed my cheek and left. I was glad that he could finally accept that there was no room for him romantically. I was so sprung on Mythic it was crazy. I thought I would be able to honor my family’s wishes, but after this, I didn’t know how I would continue to do that. Pulling my knees to my chest, I rested my head on them, wishing I was in his arms.

“You glad to be back at work?” Ashanni asked.

“I guess. It gives me something to do other than stay in my head all day.”

It was Monday, a few days after Mythic’s breakdown. I hadn’t spoken to him since. I had been extremely quiet around the house, and surprisingly, so had everyone else. My dad was usually the loudest, but even he was quiet. Depression was taking over, and this time, I was allowing it. I no longer had the drive to do anything, not even redo plans for what I wanted inside my house. I hadn’t sent the down payment, and Nesha had been calling every day, wondering when I would be ready to break ground. I didn’t care anymore.

Ashanni slid her arm around my shoulders and said, “Well, I’m glad you’re back. So we have to make the best of it.”

I gave her a tight smile and stepped out of her embrace and went to my desk. There was a lot of stuff on it, like they were using my desk as a holding station until they could organize it. It had been a while since I’d been here, at least a couple of months. I flopped in the seat and Ashanni came to me and scooped most of the stuff off my desk with a smile.

When Aunt Chas walked through the door and saw me, she came to me and hugged me tightly. I hadn’t seen her since the gravesite service we’d had for Indigo the weekend after I had her. Mythic had shown up, but only for a short time. It proved to be too much for both of us. Indigo Joan Semien would always have a part of my heart. She was buried near my grandparents and Kendrick. I needed them to look out for her in heaven.

Just as I was about to actually get started, I heard someone come into the building. “We need y’all at the family barn. Everybody.”

I frowned and went to the front to see Ali. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but it surely couldn’t have been good. We all stared at each other for a second and grabbed our things. I supposed Uncle Philly, Jakari, Rylan, and Uncle WJ already knew what was going on. As we walked out of the building, Ali escorted us to a blacked-out SUV with his gun drawn. This couldn’t be good at all.

We remained quiet, and when we got to the barndominium, the place was surrounded with security. I frowned as my stomach started to cramp. I hadn’t felt these cramps since I was pregnant. Uncle Philly, PJ, and Rhodes came to the SUV to help us out and escort us to the entrance. Once inside, I noticed everyone was already here. Getting us last made sense. We worked in the most secure building in Nome. There were no windows, and a code was needed to get in the door.

Ashanni quickly went to Asad and Jayceon, and I sat at the back, alone. Hopefully they left me here. I remembered when Milana had done the same thing, but Ryder J wouldn’t let her stay there. I just didn’t feel like associating with anyone right now. To really be out of sight, I went to the restroom. I didn’t use it before leaving home, because I woke up late and was rushing. By the time I was done, Uncle WJ was turning the floor over to Ali. As I looked around, I didn’t see my family. Had something happened and they not tell me?This was fucked up.

As soon as I sat, Ali’s eyes landed on me, and he said something to the man next to him. He immediately came to me, and said, “Miss Maui, I have to take you to the hospital to be with your family.”

My eyebrows lifted as I stood and swallowed hard. “W-what happened?”

“We’ll talk in the car, okay?”

I nodded and followed him out of the building. He opened the door for me, and I got in. I was trembling so badly my knees were knocking. He got in and cranked up, then backed out of the parking spot, and hit the highway. He glanced at me and said, “I’m Chad Berotte. Shyrón Berotte is my brother. I also work for Watchful Eyes. I’m taking you to the hospital because SS got shot.”

I started crying immediately. I hated that my brother got himself involved in that street shit by snitching on Mythic. “When, where?”

“He was in Liberty, talking to Mythic. Mythic is at the hospital too.”

“Did he get shot?”

I couldn’t take this shit. My nerves were about to explode all at once.

“No, ma’am. They were talking and shots rang out. Mythic tackled your brother to the ground, but Seven still got hit in the leg. We aren’t sure which one they were aiming for. Since Mythic killed Adrian, they could be coming for him as well. Seven never left their hitlist. Jericho is looking for the assailant, he and Seneca.”

I breathed out a sigh of relief. “Is Seven gonna be okay?”

“It looks that way. He’s in surgery. It happened a couple of hours ago.”

“Why didn’t anyone call me? Why am I the last to find out?”

“They didn’t want you to know they were trying to make things right with Mythic. They wanted to surprise you. They didn’t have a choice but tell you after the meeting was called. You would notice that none of them were there.”

“So Mythic saved Seven for a second time.”

Chad smiled slightly. “It seems that way. He seemed slightly upset about that shit too.”

I frowned slightly, then thought about what I knew about Mythic. He probably couldn’t understand why he even wanted to save Seven. I chuckled softly as Chad glanced at me. “Mythic is a street nigga, and he can’t stand Seven. He’s probably pissed that his natural instinct was to save him yet again.”
