Chad chuckled. “You obviously know him well. That was almost word for word what he said. But he also said he couldn’t wait to see you.”
I smiled so hard. I couldn’t wait to see him either. Knowing that my family was trying to settle things between them and Mythic made my heart smile. They cared more about my heart than they let on. I knew that letter I let my daddy read probably had a lot to do with it, not to mention him hearing Mythic break down on the phone. Seven was willing to put their differences aside for me. Besides, he’d gotten his revenge. Mythic was still wearing a cast to prove it. Hopefully, he didn’t reinjure himself by diving on Seven.
When we got to the hospital, I saw Mythic standing outside. As soon as Chad came to a complete stop, I hopped out of the car and ran right to him. I nearly hopped in his arms as he chuckled.
“Damn, lil mama. You miss me?”
His ass was tryna play it cool and act all nonchalant like he wasn’t just as excited to see me. I placed my hands at the back of his neck and pulled him to me. I kissed his lips and tried to give him my tongue, but he separated our kiss, then removed the blade from his mouth. Afterward, he kissed me with a sense of urgency.
When I pulled away from him, I said, “I’d made a decision to go to you. Being without you has been hard, and that shit was killing me inside. After I read your letter, I knew I couldn’t go much longer without you. Today was going to be the day.”
“I missed you so fucking much, girl. I swear I don’t know who the fuck I am anymore. Come on, let’s go inside. I was waiting for you.”
I smiled, then grabbed his hand and let him lead me inside to where my family was. Maybe this would finally be the start of what I always knew it could be . . . something distinct, impactful, passionate, and special.
EIGHTEEN
MYTHIC
“Aww shit. What this nigga on?”PJ said.
I looked up to see Seven turning in the driveway. Surely, he wouldn’t be bringing no shit to my parents’ house. If he was, that nigga had lost his entire mind, and I was finna help him find that shit. He and Ace got out of the truck, so I calmed down a bit. Ace was my nigga. I still tucked my tool in my waistband though. He wasn’t finna catch my ass slipping.
We met the two of them halfway, as I played with the blade in my mouth. I would slice his ass up before he saw that shit coming. I had nothing to live for without Maui, so if I couldn’t have her, he wasn’t important to protect anymore. He could catch all this fucking aggression right here, right now.
He lifted his hands slightly when he got close. “I ain’t coming with no shit, man. We need to really chop it up. Like for real, for real. I’m tired of seeing my sister looking miserable, man. She love the fuck out of you, and I couldn’t figure out why. She could have found dick anywhere. Then I read the letter you wrote her in the bouquet you had delivered the other day. There’s clearly a side of you no one knows but her. For her to be able to pull it out of you, she definitely has to be special to you.”
I relaxed slightly as I glanced at PJ. “I love her. For me to even be able to admit that to her, let alone another nigga, speaks of how deeply her spirit resides in mind. I’m sorry about what happened two years ago. That shit was fucked up.”
“Two and a half years ago and yeah, it was definitely fucked up. I got my revenge for what all I went through because of that. Since I got my revenge and you done saved my ass, I been tryna figure out why I’m still holding on to my grudge. I realized my issue was that I didn’t trust you. I thought you could be trying to be with her to eventually get at one of us.”
I could see his point, especially after what he already knew about me. Just as I was about to say something, I saw a car slow rolling up on us. I frowned when the window went down, and I saw the barrel of a gun. Without even thinking, I dove on Seven, causing him to leave his feet and hit the ground hard. Those muthafuckas were bold. PJ was blasting right back. “Fuuuck!” Seven yelled.
“You good, man?” I asked as I tried to roll my shoulder.
My fucking arm was throbbing. I rolled off him, realizing I had saved this muthafucka yet again, putting my own life at risk. Since Maui would rather be with her family than me, I supposed it didn’t matter.
“I’m fucking hit.”
I looked all over him, trying to find where he was hit at, then saw the blood on his pants. “Fuck! One of y’all call an ambulance.”
Ace was already on it. I was glad neither of those niggas got hit, simply from being innocent bystanders of the shit between Seven and me. I took off my plaid shirt and tied it around his thigh. That shit was close to his knee, so hopefully it didn’t do significant damage. The way he was handling the pain was admirable though. He was clenching his teeth and growling asI tightened it. Once I released it, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes as he bit his bottom lip.
When he reopened them, he nodded repeatedly. “You done saved me twice. The first time, I attributed it to the fact that Maui was with me, and you were just trying to protect her. This time, you could have let those muthafuckas kill me. You didn’t have to do what you did.”
I frowned harder, and I stood from the ground. “You fucking right. It’s bothering me slightly about why I did. You being out the fucking way would have benefitted me.”
He didn’t respond to me immediately. Finally, he said, “You have my respect, man. Fuck all that other shit. I’m willing to let it go if you are.”
I glanced over at him as Ace went to his side. I turned my gaze to PJ, and he gave me a shoulder shrug. Seven extended his hand. “We got witnesses that I’m saying this shit. Ace ain’t gon’ lie for me when it’s something this serious, man. For real. Maui needs you.”
I swallowed hard, then grabbed his hand and shook it. I nodded slightly as my dad drove up behind the ambulance. He ran to us and when he saw me, he released a sigh of relief, but when he saw Seven, he said, “Fuck!” Looking right at me, he asked, “What happened, man?”
I could tell that he thought that I did that shit, so to fuck with him, I said, “That nigga showed up here talking big shit. I had the last laugh.”
His frown was deep as PJ chuckled. My dad was confused as hell. The police walked up the driveway to get a report of what happened. PJ was able to give them the license plate of the assailant. After my dad heard the real story, he shot me the finger. “That’s yo’ ass later.”
I smiled, feeling better than I’d felt the past few months.
