I briefly wondered if she was implying something about my relationship with the wedding planner. I brushed the thought aside. “Great. I really like the hotel, and the food is delicious.”

“Good. Anything else I need to know?”

“No,” I answered quickly, too quickly if the silence on the other end was any indication. I stood and started pacing at the foot of the bed. “How are you doing? How’s London?”

“It’s good. I miss Connor. But the city is amazing, and so are my colleagues. The hours are crazy, but I’m still hoping to venture out and really experience the city.”

“That’s great.” I smiled, sincerely happy for her.

“Yeah.” Despite her enthusiasm, I sensed she was a little down. “I’m just not sure how I’ll make it six weeks without seeing Connor.”

“I thought he was coming to visit sooner?”

“He’s too busy at work.”

Too busy to make time to see my daughter, his fiancée? I gnashed my teeth, not liking that answer. I knew how difficult long-distance could be, but I also knew that he was going to have to put in the work if he wanted to be with my daughter.

“That’s no excuse.”

“Dad.” She laughed. “I’m doing the same thing. And we’re trying to save up vacation time for the honeymoon.”

“Mm-hmm.” I stopped pacing and sat at the foot of the bed.

“What?”

“Nothing.” I didn’t want to ruin her day, but I intended to have a little conversation with my future son-in-law.

“Hey, have you talked to Mom lately?” Olivia asked, interrupting my thoughts.

“No. Should I?”

“She has some thoughts on the seating charts. I told her to take it up with you.”

“Gee, thanks.”

“She also told me she intends to bring her new boyfriend, and she’d like for him to be in the photos.” She sounded surprisingly calm, considering.

I scrubbed a hand over my face. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

“The family pictures? Do you think they’ll even still be together by the time the wedding rolls around?” I asked but immediately regretted it. I didn’t want Olivia to feel caught between her mom and me. And I didn’t want to disrespect Cam in front of our daughter, even if my ex drove me nuts at times.

She laughed. “Who knows. I seriously hope not—he’s practically the same age as me. I mean, what can they possibly have in common besides the obvious?”

I grimaced, thinking of Juliana. Though I wasn’t old enough to be her father, she was significantly younger than me. How would Olivia feel if Juliana and I were together? Would she be as disgusted by the idea?

“Dad?” she asked. “You still there?”

I shook my head to clear it. “Don’t worry. I’ll sort it out.” I didn’t want anything to ruin Olivia’s day.

“Thanks.” She cleared her throat, and I wondered if there was something more. Then she said, “I have a favor to ask.”

“Another one?” I teased. “I’m not planning your bachelorette party.”

“Ew. No.” She laughed. “Alyssa’s got that covered. But since I’m out of town, I was wondering if maybe you could invite Connor over for dinner every so often while I’m gone. I really want you two to get along since he’s going to be my husband.”

I frowned. “We get along.”

“I know, but… Well, I think he feels like maybe you don’t like him.”
