He blinked. “Come again?”
I explained everything from Harper’s intel to our fight. Reg listened intently, then scrubbed a hand over his face. “Let me get this straight. She flew halfway across the world to see if it’s even him?”
I nodded.
“And you haven’t heard from her?”
I shook my head. What else could I say?
“Why did you let her go?”
I considered it a moment, even though I already knew the answer. Maybe I hadn’t at the time, but since she’d left, my decision and the reasons for it had crystallized in my mind. And as difficult as it had been to let her go, I knew it was the right path. I just wasn’t sure how to make Reg understand.
“We can’t move forward until she puts the past—Ryan—to rest.” Just saying his name had my blood pressure spiking.
“If you love them, you have to set them free? That about sum it up?”
“Yeah. Sure.”
“Bullshit.” He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “If you love someone, you don’t let them go. You fight for them.”
I jerked my head back. “I’m not going to compete with another man, even if he is a ghost. Besides—” I huffed. “I did fight. I fought for her to stay.”
“When that didn’t work, you should’ve fought to go with her.”
I shook my head. He didn’t understand.
“Harrison,” he chided. “This isn’t Cam. And Juliana’s not cheating on you.”
“Isn’t she, though? She flew across the world to be with her former fiancé.”
“Did she say why?” He paused, as if waiting for me to connect some piece I was missing. “Did she say it was because she wanted to be with him? Or that she was still in love with him? Or that she wanted to marry him?”
“No, but—”
“Exactly.” He clapped his hands together, and it seemed to echo off the tile floor of the room.
“If you ask me—”
“Which I didn’t,” I interjected.
He continued speaking all the same. “She just wants closure. Wouldn’t you, were roles reversed?”
My shoulders slumped. “Yeah.”
“I mean, doesn’t it say a lot about her that she’s still dedicated to finding him after all this time?”
I hadn’t thought about it that way.
“But when is enough enough? If it’s not him, when will she stop looking and commit to me?”
His expression was sympathetic. “That’s a question only she can answer. But I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive. She can hold out hope that he’s alive but still want to be with you.”
“I can’t lose her.” I swallowed, knowing how hard the past week had been. I didn’t want to be apart anymore or ever again. “I can’t.”
“Then fight for her.”
“How?” I croaked, feeling defeated and depleted. I wasn’t sure I had any energy left to fight.
