“Absolutely,” Lila replies with conviction. “And not just because I think you’re talented. You see, I’m in an unconventional relationship myself, so I understand how it feels to have people judge you for something that has nothing to do with your abilities or your worth as a person.”
“Thank you,” I say again, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes. Her support means more to me than she could possibly know.
“Remember, Emma,” Lila says, her voice firm but kind. “Don’t let the world dictate your relationships or who you are. You’re strong, talented, and deserving of all the opportunities that come your way.”
As we reach the exit, I take one last look at Lila, her words resonating deeply within me. I nod, promising myself that I will hold onto her advice and use it as a guiding light in the days to come.
“Thank you, Lila,” I say once more, my voice filled with gratitude. “For everything.”
“You’re welcome, Emma,” she replies, her smile warm and genuine. “Now go out there and show the world what you’re made of.”
I practically sprint to the guys’ house, my heart pounding with excitement and anticipation. When I arrive, I burst through the door, unable to contain my enthusiasm.
“Guys! You’re not going to believe what just happened!” I exclaim, my voice breathless from both the news and my hurried journey.
“Emma, what’s going on?” JD asks, concern etched across his face as he takes in my flushed cheeks and wild eyes.
“Slow down, babe,” Luka says, placing a calming hand on my shoulder. “Tell us everything.”
“Okay, okay,” I say, taking a deep breath. “So, I was called into the dean’s office today, and I was freaking out but it was a good thing!”
“What was it?” Alec asks, curiosity piqued.
“I met Lila Montgomery, who runs one of the most prestigious singing programs in the country. She offered me a spot in their summer program!” I gush, the words tumbling out in a torrent.
“Emma, that’s amazing!” JD exclaims, pulling me into a tight hug.
“You deserve this,” Luka adds, joining the hug.
Alec joins, completing our group embrace.
“Thank you, guys,” I say, my voice muffled against their chests. “She saw the Spring Showcase and it caught her attention in a good way.”
“Let’s celebrate!” Luka suggests, breaking away from the hug and heading toward the kitchen to grab some drinks.
“Definitely!” Alec agrees, following him.
As we sit around the living room, sipping our drinks and chatting excitedly about my opportunity, I feel lighter than I have in days.
Now, we just have to get JD, Luka, and Alec back on the team and secure their futures as well.
There are people out there who will take our side and we just need to find those people.
Chapter 50
The sun warms my face as I walk across campus, a light breeze playing with my long hair.
“Hey, Emma!” Liam calls out, his voice carrying across the quad as he approaches me with Miles and Reed, all members of the hockey team, at his side.
“Hi guys,” I greet them with a hesitant smile, wondering what brings them my way.
“Listen, we wanted to talk to you about something,” Matt says, his expression serious. “It’s about Alec, JD, and Luka.”
My heart skips a beat, and anxiety rises within me. “What about them?” I ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
Are they about to tell me off for losing the guys their spot on the team?
Liam takes a deep breath before continuing. “We think it’s unfair that they were suspended from the team just because Coach doesn’t agree with your relationship.”
