Izzy flashed her an incredulous look. “Are you sure? You haven’t seen anything yet.”
“I’m feeling a bit... spent. I’d rather lie on your couch and listen to music.” Mia stretched her arms overhead, producing a genuine yawn. She wasn’t really that tired, but she could tell Izzy had reached his limit. She wanted him back in his safe place, relaxed and comfortable. “Besides, I’m stuck here. I’ll have time for sightseeing later.”
“Okay.”
He didn’t sound convinced, but she noticed the subtle softening in his posture. Mia studied his side profile, chewing on her lower lip. What on earth was hiding behind the huge, bushy beard? Who was he and what had made him this way? One minute, he oozed irresistible charisma, and the next he seemed so tense and uncomfortable that she desperately wanted to save him, defend him. Either way, she couldn’t keep away.
Seeing him relax, she couldn’t help adding fuel to the fire. “And if we stay in, we don’t have to lie about it tomorrow.”
Izzy’s head whipped around. “What do you mean?”
“Well, if I’m supposed to play your girlfriend and I just arrived in the country... I’m sure we wouldn’t have any time for sightseeing just yet.”
“We wouldn’t?” His brow knitted in confusion.
Was he pretending to not understand? Mia shoved him with her shoulder. “Come on! Your long-distance girlfriend comes to town. What do you do? Take her to a museum?”
Izzy’s face pulled into a lazy grin and he run his shovel-sized hand over his beard. “Yeah, nah.”
“Can’t go sightseeing naked, right?” She lowered her voice into a husky whisper. “And do you think I would rush to the shops to buy more underwear? I’d just wear one of your shirts with nothing under—”
“Okay, stop it before I drive off the road.” His voice was gruff.
Mia flashed him a wicked smile, watching the muscle in his forearm twitch as he squeezed the steering wheel. Sure, she’d flustered herself, but it was worth it. “Payback.” She grinned.
His eyebrows raised in mock innocence. “Payback for what?”
“For all that whispering in my ear! You’re using that... caveman alpha male energy for evil!” She waved her hand at him, pursing her lips in disapproval.
Izzy erupted in hooting laughter. “What energy?” He puffed up his chest. “Besides, that’s not the same at all. I’m driving! I can easily get us both killed. You know I haven’t had a girlfriend...” his voice trailed off as darkness fell over his eyes. “I mean, I haven’t even had visitors. You’re playing with fire.”
Was she? Mia straightened her spine, drawing a calming breath. Maybe she needed to bring the temperature down a notch. Sparring with him filled her with delight, but every joke inched her deeper into the danger zone.
Chapter 15
Izzy shifted to makeroom for the persistent hard-on he couldn’t get rid of. It was all her fault. He’d had this problem ever since she’d arrived in his life in those tiny shorts, and now she’d made it much worse.
