“That’s the easiest promise to make. You’re the only one I want to ever kiss.” He seals his pledge with his lips on mine.
Our van rolls up to the tarmac at the airport, and we board the team jet. Mr. Dimon is on board, working in the back.
We all take our regular seats even though the jet is almost empty.
A flight attendant announces the plane needs to be de-iced before takeoff, so there will be a delay.
“Thanks for coming to get me.” Gray pulls up the armrest so he can snuggle close.
“I wasn’t going to spend another night without you.” I drag him into my lap and rub my cheek on the top of his head. My eyes drift shut, and I’m close to drifting off since I haven’t slept well in days.
My body jolts from a tap on my shoulder, and Mr. Dimon stands over us. “I’d like a word with you two in the back, if you don’t mind.”
Grayson scrambles up, and I drag a hand over my face, following them. We sit in luxury chairs facing each other with a table between us.
“First, I’m happy you’re back, Mr. Ward.” Mr. Dimon’s tone is formal, setting me on edge.
“Thank you, sir.”
“I won’t waste your time with small talk. We’ll need to make a few changes based on your current relationship, specifically, Mr. Ward, you cannot treat Mr. Lapointe.”
I’m ready to argue, but Gray lays his hand on my thigh. “Of course, it would be a conflict of interest, and I won’t risk him or the team. But as of now, we don’t have a plan to announce our relationship publicly.”
A growl escapes my throat, and Mr. Dimon raises an eyebrow.
“Austin, don’t bend under pressure to come out. You’re already under scrutiny because of me, and we shouldn’t add to it.”
“What difference will it make?” I’m not proud of my childish question.
“If I may interject, you have two choices.” Mr. Dimon folds his hands on the table. “You can wait for a better time to make an announcement, such as the off-season. The advantage is you’ll be out of the spotlight. The disadvantage is that it prolongs the time you’re the source of gossip and speculation. Or you couldget it all out at once. Make a statement about the altercation and both criminal and civil charges and your relationship. Include anything I left out.” He chuckles. “You will be hounded, but we’re experienced at protecting our players from mobs. Liska is a hard man to disguise, but with Trevor’s help, we kept photographers away from him. Take your time to discuss it, but I’ve set up a meeting for you with Finn. Do you have any questions?”
“What specific changes do I need to make to keep my job even though we’re in a relationship?” Gray asks.
“The lines were blurred regarding our policy since you two had a personal relationship before Mr. Ward began his job, and the organization overlooked it. I won’t stand in the way of your relationship or Mr. Ward’s livelihood,” Mr. Dimon states matter-of-factly.
“Shit.” My mind races with all Grayson could have lost because of me.
“You will both sign new waivers, and Mr. Ward will agree not to treat you, Mr. Lapointe.”
“But he’s the best,” I blurt out.
“It’s a power imbalance if my treatments and assessment of your fitness affect your playing time. If you’re hurt, I’ll make sure your treatment is appropriate.” Gray nudges my shoulder.
“I didn’t hear that.” Mr. Dimon shakes his head. “No one told me running a hockey team would be so similar to facilitating a dating app.” His smile contradicts his stern tone.
We return to our seats for the short flight. Sleep will have to wait.
“I can hear you thinking.” Gray’s lips move against my neck.
It’s embarrassing to admit he’s right. “Should I come out now instead of later?”
“Are you ready for it? Did you change your mind?” He throws a leg over mine as if to comfort me.
“I don’t want to hide you or sneak around.” It’s hard to put into words all the things I want at the same time that are in direct conflict. Like telling the world I love him and keeping our relationship out of the public eye.
“We don’t have to decide today. Once you’re ready, we’ll do it.”
“It’s that simple, huh?” I rub his thigh, bringing him closer.
