“Yep.” Lennon snaps her fingers. “Though it’s more likely that we’ll be passed out by nine o’clock.”
Sophie and I laugh, then exchange hugs and goodbyes with Lennon before walking to her car. We get inside, and she zoomsdown the street like she’s racing every vehicle that pulls up beside her.
“So are you dead set on cherry red for the bridesmaids’ dresses?” I ask once we’re halfway home. “I lookreallygood in black. Just saying.” I smirk as I type out a text to Liam.
Maddie
The adults are gonna be gone tonight. Don’t make plans.
Liam
Fuck. I better cancel those strippers then.
Maddie
Why? They can watch.
Liam
That’s an odd kink, but I’m not arguing I’ll get Diamond & Starr here ASAP!
“What’re you giggling about over there?” Sophie asks, and I quickly lock my phone.
“Nothing, just texting a friend.” I frown at how fast the half-lie comes out.
“So, whatever happened to that hot officer guy? The one you went out with a couple of weekends ago?”
“Oh, Blake…” I pause, trying to find the right words because I can’t tell her the real reason. “He’s texted me a few times since then, but honestly, I wasn’t feeling it. So I let him down easy.”
“Really?” She furrows her brows. “He seemed like your type. Tall, hot, wears a uniform.”
Shrugging, I don’t respond. Technically, I’m not lying, except that Blake is definitely the kind of guy I would’ve been attracted to, if my heart wasn’t already taken.
She remains quiet, and when she parks in the driveway, she stops me when I unbuckle. “Mads, wait.”
“Yeah?” I frown at the concern etched all over her face.
She sighs before locking her gaze with mine. “What’re you doing?”
I search her expression. “What do you mean?”
“You and Liam,” she clarifies. “He’smarried, Maddie.”
I furrow my brows and pull back as if she’s slapped me. “I’m well aware of that. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“No? Then why are you two sneaking around?”
“What?” I squeal, my heart racing. “We’re friends, Soph. Just like always. In a weird brotherly-sister kind of way.”
Crossing her arms, Sophie wears a hard and unwavering expression. “Really? So you’re not fooling around with him?”
I pin her with a hard stare. “You think if we were doing stuff, I wouldn’t scream that kind of news off the rooftops? After all this time, if he gave any inkling of wanting me, you think I’d be able to keep that a secret?”
She pinches her lips together and shrugs again. “I don’t know, Mads. You two have been very strange lately…”
“I haven’t been working as much and am home most days. We’re forced to hang out when he’s not traveling. I don’t know what’s so strange about that.” I grab the door handle and get out before she can continue to drill me. I fucking hate lying to her face, but I know the consequences if she found out the truth.
I stay in my room until my stomach starts growling, and then I surface to find some food. It’s six o’clock, and Mason and Sophie are running around getting ready to leave for the night.
