My throat dried. His blue eyes were hypnotic. I couldn’t stop staring at them as they drew nearer by the second.

“I think I found a fun new nickname for you,” he breathed. His lips were half an inch away from mine. He licked his lower lip. “Wife.”

“Never,” I said in a breath.

My hands were shaking, and he must’ve noticed that because he immediately gripped both of them with his free hand. Finally, his warm, rosy lips meld with mine, and his wandering sweet cinnamon-tasting tongue sought mine out. It was a soft and slow kiss, like the ones he gave me on his bed the night before—effortless. I could’ve stayed there forever.

Talk about getting in the right headspace.

Someone cleared their throat.Shit! And if I had to put my money on it, I would have to say that it was Caleb. I became so immersed in my conversation with William that I don’t know if I forgot about Caleb or didn’t care about him sitting right behind us when William kissed me.

William cleared his throat with a laugh and straightened up in his seat. He took his phone and texted me again. I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry, so I grabbed my phone too and tried to bury my face in it.

And now William wasn’t the only one texting me.

Caleb:Having fun with your husband?

Me:It’s just a joke.

Caleb:Why is he calling you wife? I don’t like this guy. I don’t want you to get hurt. He’s a player.

Me:We’re just texting.

Caleb:Is that what you kids are calling it these days?

Kids. I stared at the screen, trying to come up with an answer.

William nudged my shoulder with his, wondering why I wasn’t answering his texts. I didn’t know what to reply to Caleb, so I thought it was best to talk to him later in person. I could tell he was upset and probably confused too. I didn’t blame him.

W.S.:Are you leaving me on the back burner?

Me:It took me less than a minute to reply to you. You’ll survive.

W.S.:Waiting time goes slower than regular time.

Me:So just like the opposite of snooze time?

William laughed.

W.S.:Exactly. I might have to punish you for this one.

Me:Hey! What’d I do?

W.S.:You made me wait. And I hate waiting. But don’t worry. I’ll make sure you like it.

I swallowed hard. My cheeks were warming up again. I obviously didn’t know what to answer to that.

We were a few blocks away from the apartment building, and as I kept thinking of a reply, my phone buzzed with an incoming call.Saved by the bell, because I was most definitely under-qualified, mind you, to keep up with such a conversation with William. As interesting as it might’ve been.

It was Thomas. William met my gaze and searched for my hand. It was comforting. I swiped right to answer the call.

“Hey, Billie. My flight’s been delayed. I will be there today, but late. Can we meet tomorrow?” The disappointment in his voice was undeniable.

“Sure, um. I’ve got school tomorrow. But I’ll be free after eight.” I had to meet with Ben and Nolan, plus I was training with Grant at seven.

“Okay,” he agreed. “I’ll see you tomorrow, then.” He hung up the phone with resignation. I turned to look at William and found comfort in his calm semblance.

If Thomas knew I was holding hands with William, kissing him, and had slept on his bed last night … I don’t know if he would’ve been so eager to come to talk to me. Even though we weren’t together anymore, I still felt guilty about kissing William. But damn, it was so hard refusing him. Starting with the fact that I didn’t want to.
