“I guess you’re right. I’ll talk to her tomorrow, but right now, I want to hang out with my girlfriend if that’s okay with you.”

“Sounds good to me,” I replied with a wearied smile.

Thomas left a couple of hours later, and I immediately ran to the living room and retrieved the white envelope from underneath the cushion. I wanted nothing more than to build a bonfire and burn the entirety of its contents. Instead, I placed the photograph and film rolls in my nightstand drawer, read the letter one more time, and tore it into a million tiny pieces.

I had left my phone in my purse the entire time Thomas was with me, so I changed into my pajamas and laid on my bed to check on my messages.

Thomas:I’m so sorry about today, babe. I feel awful. I’ll make it up to you, I swear. I love you.

Me:Don’t worry. I love you too. GN.

I spotted a text by an unknown number, so I assumed it was Lily.

Unknown: Hej älskling.

You’ve got to be kidding me. When I read the text, I assumed it was William. And yes, I assumed right.

I needed to look up the meaning of that word as soon as possible. It made me nervous to see that he fired this text when Thomas was still in my apartment. Luckily, I’d left my phone in my purse. It wouldn’t surprise me if someday Thomas asked me if he could go through my messages, or worse, did it without my consent.

Me:Where’d you get my number?

William replied to my text a few seconds later.

Unknown:I see you’ve received my special delivery.

Me:I still don’t know what älskling means, but yes, I did, and you’re a thief btw.

W.S.:You’re a smart girl. Look it up. I borrowed your film and returned it. That’s not stealing.

Me:Seriously, where’d you get my number?

W.S.:Lily gave it to me. It wasn’t easy, though. I told her I wanted to apologize for everything, so that did the trick.

Me:That’s the worst apology I’ve ever heard.

W.S.:That’s because I’m not apologizing.

Me:I can imagine it’s not something you would know how to do.

W.S.:I will never be sorry for kissing you.

Me: We did NOT kiss. You launched at me, and I slapped you away. Know the difference.

W.S.:Fun, wasn’t it?

Me:Jerk.

W.S.:I know.

Me:Stop texting me.

W.S.:Never.

Ughhh! I was tempted to throw my phone out the window.

I had another text from a new contact. This one was actually from Lily. She sent it before William did, trying to let me know she had shared my contact with him.

Unknown:Hi! It’s Lily.
