“That,”—he pointed his finger over my shoulders from side to side—“can be easily fixed.”

I looked over my shoulders again with a puzzled expression on my face, trying to find the so-called damage he was mentioning. But my efforts were to no avail. I couldn’t see shit. But I did feel a crushing heaviness around me because of what happened earlier with Nina and William.

“Make sure you tell me later. Um—I need to tell you something. It’s important.” I was convinced his psychic abilities didn’t cover that much ground because his face was genuinely shocked when I said, “I speak Spanish.”

“Oh,” he said, a small smile drawing on his face. “So, you heard my conversation on the phone, and now you’re curious about my intentions with Nina?”

I nodded. At least he was quick-witted. “I don’t want to meddle in your affairs. I’m not even sure of what any of that was, but Nina’s my friend, and I care about her. I don’t want her to get hurt.”

Juan Pablo sighed.

“Look, I have a way more open mind for such matters than Nina does. That’s where we’ve struggled. She’s recently become aware of—a few of my kindred spirit relationships in the past.” A few? What is wrong with this guy?

“But you know what? I really love Nina. She’s not only a kindred spirit but a twin flame.”

Twin-what? So was Nina hismainkindred spirit? I didn’t know what he meant by those terms, but it sure as hell sounded like a holistic excuse to mess around with other girls while dating Nina.

“Well, I don’t know if that’s fair to her when she doesn’t necessarily agree with you. Does she know you tell other girls that you love them?”

“Not exactly. But that’s because she’s not evolved yet into the realm of universal and unconditional love. She doesn’t understand that love can be felt and emanated in such ways. Monogamy and commitment aren’t mutually exclusive.”

Wow.

Nina wasn’t evolved enough for Juan Pablo to let her know that he’s constantly cheating on her? What a sack of bollocks.

“Well, I don’t feel comfortable having heard your conversation over the phone. I didn’t choose to do it. And you can call me unevolved, but I don’t understand those concepts, and for what you’re telling me, neither does Nina.

“I think it’s best if you could talk to her and let her know about it because I feel obligated as a friend to inform her. And I’m sure she would appreciate it even more if it came directly from you. I know I would if I were in her position.”

“Of course,” he said with a nod. I could hear movement behind William’s door. He walked out, all dressed up—impeccable as always and smelling like heaven.

“Hey, man! Nice to meet you. I’m Juan Pablo,” he said with a grin. “You’re William Sjöberg, right?”

William coaxed a smile back and shook Juan Pablo’s hand. “Yes, I am. Nice to meet you, Juan Pablo.”

“Juan Pablo is Nina’s boyfriend,” I pitched in. I thought he might find my remark to be an interesting and educational one.

“Oh, I see,” he said, raising his left brow. But that dreaded frown of his appeared in between his blue eyes afterward. “I’m running late. Have a good evening. Nice to meet you, Juan Pablo.”

My hands were shaking, so I crossed my arms in front of me to keep it from showing. William clicked on the elevator button and kept looking my way.

Juan Pablo gave his back to William and looked at my shoulders and that immediate space above my head again as he did when we first stepped out to talk.

“Interesting,” he said, brushing his chin.

“What’s interesting?” I asked, too quickly to sound relaxed.

William disappeared into the elevator and didn’t brush his lower lip like he always did. I guess he was trying tobrush me awayinstead, as I should’ve been doing too.

“I was just thinking about how interesting it is that the cause or the reason for our ailments can sometimes also be the cure. You know? Like antivenom.”

Interesting analogy. But Juan Pablo was diving too deep into a conversation I was finding hard to follow.

“It’s funny how you claim not to understand the concepts of love I just mentioned before when I could see how both of your auras are intertwined from crown to base,” he said, lifting the right corners of his lips into a lopsided smile.

He can see what?

“I—you’ll need to explain that to me. Who’s intertwined?” I asked quizzically.
