She giggles, and I swear the sound goes straight to my dick. It’s light and airy enough to be sexy without having that touch of trying too hard that some of the women displayed back in New England.

“Sir, yes sir,” she replies. “So, is my pulse okay?”

I shake my head, giving up trying to feel it. “I’m never going to be able to find it if you don’t hold still.” Amelia nods and holds a finger up to her full lips, letting me know she’ll be quiet. I’m finally able to get it. It’s fine. Now, let’s check out your reflexes.”

I reach over to the table and pull out the hammer, striking her lightly on the knee. The leg moves as it should. I check the second one and receive the same result. A few of the backs that I checked out all mentioned some tight calves, so I grab ahold of hers and lightly massage my fingers up and down. The calf isn’t even tight; toned yes, but not tight. As I move further up her leg and inch closer to her knee, I hear her suck in a breath. I look up.

My first mistake.

Our eyes lock.

I gently rub a small circle around the back of her leg, watchingher. The way her brown eyes are staring directly at mine, I can see what looks like arousal building there. I’ve seen it many times while I was single and again when I was married. Just not necessarily from my wife.

“Dex,” August calls out, rapping on the doorframe of the training room.

Our eyes snap in his direction. I drop her leg and stand up, making my way over to him.

“What’s up, man?” I ask him, trying my best to compose myself, and hoping that he didn’t read anything into what he saw.

“Umm, I was coming in to let you know that Elise is looking for you. She actually called my phone.” He glances at Amelia and then back at me. “Everything okay in here?”

“Health checks,” I reply. I look back over at Amelia, who is staring at the floor. “I’ll check in with Elise, thanks for letting me know.”

“You’re welcome.” August stares at me for a moment, flashing me that megawatt smile and snickering. “I’ll catch you later, you enjoy those health checks.”

I swear the words “health checks” should have those air quotes around it, judging by the way he’s watching me. Like he can tell I was having trouble examining Amelia. I slowly make my way back to her.

“Who is Elise?” she asks, biting her lip as she stares me.

“My ex-wife,” I reply matter-of-factly and get ready to get back to what we were doing.

“Ah, I see.”

Amelia’s eyes meet mine and I swear something flashes in them; I’m not sure if it’s jealousy or what, but I want to know more about it. Unfortunately, as quickly as it appeared, it’s gone.

“You know what, you have no injures, right? I’m not seeing anything in these half-assed records that were kept,” I ramble.

“You’re right. I’m just fine. No injures to speak of.” She slides off the table and stares at me for a moment. “It’s okay, you know.”

I want to ask her what she is talking about, but she walks out the door. I stare at it for bit, seeing it but not really. I keep thinking about how something as simple as holding her leg and checking for tightness stirred something inside of me. When it shouldn’t have. Maybe taking a job on a girls team wasn’t the best idea.

I don’t get much time to think through that because Mac’s head appears in the doorway.

“Does this mean you’re ready for the forwards?” she asks the question sweetly.

I nod. “Yeah, I’m ready.”

“Great.” Mac walks in and hops up on the table, completely oblivious to the moment I think I had with Amelia.

I look over my shoulder like I’ll still see her standing there or catch sight of her before she leaves. Even though I know I won’t. I turn my attention back to Mac and she’s all smiles, her bright blue eyes twinkling. It makes it hard not to smile back at her.

“I guess we should get started,” I tell her.

Chapter Eleven

~AMELIA~

Ididn’t see much of Dex after my health check. We were like two ships passing in the night. He was keeping some weird hours at the stadium, and he barely ever came out to watch us at practice. Not that trainers had to, but he had the first few days he was with us. So, I figured he’d always do it. I try not to ask myself why it bothers me that he doesn’t.
