“Good for her.I hope wedon’t ever see her again.”Duroc admitted.
“What are you two doingover here whispering?”Harry said.
“Harry!”Bindi yelled andhugged her.“I didn’t see you here before.”
“Tyne sent me here for aweek to make sure the newbies did okay.I went to Joey’s andcleaned up and took a nap then visited the guys at Naqi’s pack.Some of them missed me and even fought for some time with me.Mademe feel like a supermodel.”Harry giggled.
“Why wouldn’t they?You’rehot.”
“You have to say thatbecause we’re friends.”
“Not so.I could have notsaid anything.”Bindi pointed out.“Was there a winner?”
Harry blushed.“There was.”And thatseemed to be all she had to say on the subject.
The party continued but Bindi wastired.“Why don’t you let me escort you home?”Durocasked.
Harry had wandered off when she sawsome of the attractive males from HQ.Go Harry!She was ready to gohome and get some rest.“Sure.Why don’t we go now?”
Duroc offered her his arm and led heroutside.They walked briskly to Joey’s.As they entered Joey lookedup from where she sat on the couch.“I thought you two would be outlate for the party.Something else must have caught yourattention.”Joey gave them an impish smile.
It was clear she thought she knew whythey’d left early.Even though an attraction between them wasgrowing stronger, nothing would happen tonight.Since she wasn’tsure she would ever see him again, it was possible nothing wouldever happen between them.Her whole life was an unwritten scriptright now.
That was sad because he was the onlyman she’d felt drawn to in any way.All this time she’d spent here,and she was leaving, and this is the time he chose to improve.Sometimes life made no sense at all.Maybe they’d be assigned atthe same place some time in the future.A break like this mighteven be a good thing.
“You still with me?”Durocasked.
“I am.It’s been a hardweek and I’m a bit tired.That’s all.”
“Have I been working youtoo hard?”
“No, everyone is workinghard.Partying is just not my thing.”Bindi admitted.
“That’s understandable.Noteveryone likes that.You must be quieter and prefer to keep thingsthat way.”
“You’re right.I prefersmall get togethers with people I know.”
“That’s okay.I imagineyou’ll get more social in time.”Duroc assured.
With all the thing she’d seen, shewasn’t sure she wanted to.Just sticking with the people, she likedwould work out most of the time in her life as it was.Bindi wasn’ttrying to be a boss of any kind.Maybe Duroc had his mind on socialthings because he wanted to be in charge of something someday.Goodfor him.That just wasn’t a goal she had.This didn’t make her feelbad because she’d come so far already.
“You look tired.I’ll letyou get to sleep and remember you and I have plans in themorning.”
She didn’t remember the plans hereferred to, but they’d talked a lot and she didn’t remember mostof it.If she got up in time, she would be ready.Bindi had plannedto go through her usual evening ritual, but instead she fell in bedjust as she was, and a deep sleep came over her.
When she woke, she realized Duroc musthave left quietly.Getting up and getting ready was no problem andshe joined others at breakfast hoping it was at the usual time.Duroc joined them and he got some food to eat.She hurried becauseshe suspected he’d eaten elsewhere first.When she was done, theyleft.
Bindi was excited when she saw thatthey were going to the place that rented sled dogs.Of all thethings you could do here, that was what she wanted to do the most.She almost jumped up and down when he pulled up to thebusiness.
It was a surprise when Joey and Naqicame out.“Hey guys.We’re here so you won’t get lost.”Joeyexplained.
“I’m here for that not you.Joey still gets lost around here.”Naqi explained.
“You’re going to have acold bed tonight.”
“Baby, you’re great untilwe get over ten miles out.It’s a harsh environment.”
There was no denying this place couldkill you in many ways.Having them along made Duroc feel so muchbetter.They could avoid the ice and getting lost was less likely.“Thank you, Duroc.This is so nice.It’ll give me some happymemories from Wilde.”
