The list was half done, and the day hadbeen as average as they got ready to go to lunch.Duroc took themto a place he seemed familiar with. This place was in the middle ofnowhere just like they were.It was a sandwich place, and they hada mean Reuben. After they ate the two of them got back towork.

“I heard you would be oncall.”Duroc mentioned as they drove home.

“Yes, and I’ll be using thetruck.”

“Good idea to have it onhand in case you get a call.If you need me, give me a call.Willyou be off Saturday?”

“If nothing comes up.”Bindi replied.

“We can go out Saturday.Okay?”

“Okay.”

“Oh, and Bindi?”

“Yes?”

“Be careful.”

“I will.”She smiled at himas he hopped out and they walked to the office.

“Hey, Moe.”Theysaid.

“Good day?”

“It was.We finished thelist without any problems.”Bindi informed.

“That’s always good. You’vegot the truck and I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Where is everyoneelse?”

“Two teams got done earlyand you’re the third to check in.”Moe explained.

“Okay.We’ll see you in themorning.”

Moe nodded as they left.Duroc took hiscar home and she headed to Ariel’s.This was a great place to be.Bindi didn’t expect a call out.Normally they got two a month.Oddswere good she wouldn’t have much to do.

Luck wasn’t on her side. She had a callearly in the night. It seemed someone was trying to break in andthe house was five miles from here.Bindi got ready and headed out.The weight of the gun in its holster made her feel better.Therewas also a stun gun on the other side and pepper spray in her shirtpocket.

It was true that the police weresupposed to check on the calls, but they often turned out not to beanything more than set off by accident. She’d tried to call, but noone answered. This required someone to come by.Most nights fromnow on that would be her.On the road, she looked at her radio andknew an emergency button was there she could push to alert Moe orTyne.

All these things to ensure the safetyof security specialists and yet it could all still go wrong.Bindihad made it to the house where several lights were on.Sheapproached with her stun gun in one hand and a finger of the otherhand on the emergency button.

Knocking on the door, she heard someonemoving around but not toward the door. She tried to call again buteven though she could hear the phone ringing, no one was answering.Bindi went around the back and knocked there. No response and thisworried her, so she kicked in the door or at least she intended to.The guys she’d worked with made it look so easy, but she had hitand been slung back on her ass.

Maybe the simplest solution, she triedthe door. That would have been too easy. Now she checked windowsand finally found one that wasn’t locked. She crawled through thewindow. This was a small child’s room. She walked out of the roomand was attacked. The little boy jumped her and was hittingher.

“Don’t hurt my mommy.”Heyelled and he was crying.

“I’m here to help.Is yourmommy here?”Bindi asked.

The little boy nodded.

“Can you take me toher?”

He nodded again and took her handleading her down the hall.

She was collapsed on the floor andBindi dropped to her knees. Her pulse was thready, but she wasalive.Bindi pulled up her radio and called 911.
