“Was that okay?”

“That was good especiallysince I’m assuming you have no training.”Ariel said.

“No, I have none.Thosethat don’t fit a certain mold are not treated well in somepacks.”

“I know that’s true.”Bindiadmitted.

“What pack were you raisedin?”The guy asked.

“Northern Oregon. It’s ahard pack to be in for some.”

Ariel glanced at Bindi but saidnothing.“Change is in the air, and they can’t continue with theirevil ways.”Ariel assessed.“I’ll assign someone to you, and we’lldecide what needs to be done.”

The male knew he’d done wrong, and hejust accepted the way things would be.Ariel was fair and Bindiheard she redeemed many of her captives. Many got better than theyever expected. She knew interrogation was part of investigationtheinvestigation, but the way Ariel did it wouldn’t work forher.

After speaking to the leader, thereseemed no point in talking to anyone else.At least not for Arielto do it.Others would assess them and determine what to do withthem.Bindi didn’t mind because she needed some sleep.

The next morning, she was still tired, and her eyes burned. This was going to be a long day.Breakfast asusual was good.Ariel’s daughter was old enough to hold her ownplate and go down the line with Ariel when she wanted to.Her sonwas mad because he wanted to as well, but they felt he was tooyoung. He was pouting in the kitchen where the younger onesate.

Parenting seemed like a lot of work. There was no doubt she wanted to wait to have children. Her lifewasn’t in order yet and she believed it needed to be.Besides, there was no dad and a child needed both mom and dad. This wasserious thingsa serious thing to be thinking about at bedtime.Shetried to clear her head as she got ininto bed.Sleep was what sheneeded and wanted for now. When she finally got to sleep it was todreams of Duroc and children. They were a happy family.Thathappened only in dreams.Reality was harsher.

Morning came too soon as it had beendoing every day since she’d come here.Bindi got ready and went toeat.Things were normal here considering the attack last night.Itseemed they were used to it.Could that happen in time?If so,maybe she would manage to get used to her sleep being interruptedevery night.

Ariel must have eaten earlier. It wassaid wolves needed less sleep, lucky them. Some would say that wasa reason to go through the change.Ariel had offered her thatopportunity, but she wasn’t ready. How would she handle being awolf? Her memories when she was young told her many wolves weren’tworth knowing.She-wolves were in demand and a wolf might take her.Had she been wolf, even a less than desirable one she would havebeen taken and mated toby someone.

Bindi made it to the office without anyproblems. When she headed in, Duroc and Moe were waiting.“We heardAriel had an attack?”Moe asked.

“She did. They were heavilyoutnumbered, but the attackers were poorly trained, and it didn’ttake long for the tide to turn.”

“You shot from thebalcony?”

“I did.My aim has gottengood.”Bindi declared.

“Good for you.”Moe held upher fist and they bumpedbumped them.

“Were you in danger?”Durocasked.

“Not at all.Ariel made mestay inside.”

Duroc just shook his head.It seemedhe just didn’t understand. That was okay.Friends could beconcerned about each other.Hopefully he would leave thingsalone.

Chapter 5

Moving On

Duroc didn’t know how to woo a femalebecause he never had. Many human females thought wolves oldfashioned and in a way they were.Women didn’t have the full rightsmales did and even females such as Ariel often had to acquiesce totheir mates in many situations. While Blake and Ariel had managed abalance that seemed to make them both happy, many neverdid.

Being born human made things harderbecause human females had expectations.Male wolves expected torule the roost and those expectations were not only hard tounderstand, but rarely met.Bindi seemed to know enough about thewolf world to realize what an alpha male would expect from hismate, and she wasn’t willing to give it.

He understood if he pushed right now,all would be lost.It went against his nature, but he needed tostep back and give her room.Letting her drive went against hisnature as well, but here she was driving. That seemed to please herso maybe he was making points. This point system baffled him, butothers had explained he needed to let her have her way more than hedid, at least at first.

It was something he could dodo, especially if it was not a permanent thing.Bindi was worthfighting for and he would do whatever was needed.Duroc grabbed thelist from Moe as Bindi climbed into the driver’s seat.He hurriedout to join her. They were going out near Branson today. While Tynehad a specialist that lived there and worked mostly from his home, there was no way he could keep up with the demand for services inthat area.

There were four jobs on the list, butone was a repair so it should be quicker. That really depended onthe issue. It was the furthest one from here so they would startwith it.The drive was nice with them catching views of the lakeoff and on.Much of the area they drove through was wooded and heyearned to go for a run but knew he couldn’t.

This job was located in a lake viewcommunity, and everything here was perfect. All the yards wereperfectly manicured, and the houses spaced for ideal privacy.Thetracts the homes setwere on were about five acres.Looking at thehouse they were atin, Bindi would call it a mini mansion. She’dpicked up the cute human terms from the white wolves. That term fitit perfectly.

Everything was quiet, he thought tooquiet.“Let me go first.Keep the radio at the ready.”Bindinodded.
