Allison’s face falls.

“Is that a problem?”

She opens and closes her mouth like she’s searching for words.

“Look, he invitedme!I didn’t realize you’d have a problem with it.”

“No, it’s not a problem. It’s just-it’s just—”

“Seriously? It’s been six years! I thought you’d be okay with it! Truthfully, you don’t have to be, because it’s really none of your business.”

“Oh my God, Naddy, it’s not that! I swear!”

“Then why are you acting all weird?”

She shrugs. “I don’t-I don’t know.”

I set my teacup down, more than a little annoyed. For some reason, I thought that telling her would make her happy. I mean, we were like sisters growing up, and if things with Tom work out, we could eventually be sisters, of a sort.

“I think I’m going to leave.”

“Okay.” She gets up from her chair to see me out.

I grab my bag, and as I pull it over my shoulder, her hand catches my wrist.

“Naddy, I don’t want to lose you again. I’m just concerned for you. Tom’s had a lot of growing up to do. I really hope when you see him, everything works out.”

I crack a smile and pull her in for a hug. Though I’m still annoyed, I don’t want something stupid coming between us again.

“I’ll keep in touch,” I finally say, giving her a kiss on her cheek.

“Please do.”
