He squats, whispering, “Alrighty! Let’s get you back to bed,” into my ear.

“Back to bed? Don’t we need to do scans to make sure my spinal cord isn’t compromised?”

The doctor ignores me, telling the nurse to take me back to my room.

Part of me is angry, but I’m so exhausted and confused, I simply sit there. Silent. Waiting for someone to tell me what’s going on.

Finally, the doctor comes back in, pulling a chair up next to the bed.

“Nadine Winters,” he says, looking at his clipboard.

“Yes?”

“One of the tests administered today was a pregnancy test.”

“Okay?”

“And it turns out, you’re pregnant. The level of hCG in your blood is low, so we can safely assume the pregnancy occurred recently. This means we cannot complete the scans.”

Holy shit!

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it?” he says with a skewed brow.

It is possible. It’s entirely possible that you got knocked up by Maxwell Stryder while being held hostage on a boat, right before he had legal ‘let you go.’ Oh, he is going to be so pissed.

But for some reason, I’m not. I’m not upset at all. In fact, I’m elated. I’ve always wanted to be a mother, and even though I’m single, I have the time, energy, and means to do dedicate to parenthood. If Maxwell doesn’t want to be a part of the child’s life, so be it. Who knows, maybe Tom would make a good uncle for my baby, just as he will for Allison’s.

But right now, I it’s too much. Everything is happening too fast, and I need a moment to breathe.

“I think I need to be alone.”

“I understand. All of your tests have come back good. I’m not that concerned about your neck, but it might be good for you to wear the cervical collar for a couple of days.”

“Leave!”

The doctor gets up, leaving me alone in the cold, white room.
