“What are you talking about, ALAN?”
And just when I think the jet is about to take off, it slows.
“Huh?” Bruiser says.
The plane decelerates, but we are still speeding towards it. Bruiser slams on the breaks, veering to avoid colliding with the now almost stationary jet. The car lurches, careening to the side. My phone goes flying, and my face smashes against the seat in front of me.
So this is how I die…
The car spins, coming up on two wheels before slamming back down to the ground.
“Sorry about that,” Bruiser says.
I sit back, bringing my hands up to inspect them, and when I find out I’m fine, I look around to make sure everyone else is okay.
Irene busies herself, fixing her hair, barely bothered by the whole ordeal. Devon seems to be in shock.
Cars are pulling up to the plane, men are exiting, guns drawn.
Oh, no! They’ll kill him!
“This hit me in my face!” Devon says, handing me back my shattered phone.
I pocket it, exiting the vehicle to figure out a way to save my brother.
Chapter 36
Drake
We pull up to the plane with a dozen other cars. Before we fully stop, I jump out and rush towards the aircraft.
ALAN did exactly what he said he’d do and shut down the plane, but whether or not he’s stopped Evil ALAN from uploading to the greater internet is still a worry.
At least two dozen armed men circle the plane, getting into position.
Jim steps past me, megaphone in hand. “We’ve got you surrounded,” he shouts. “Step out of the aircraft with your hands in the air.”
A hand grabs my elbow, and I look over to see Grace standing there, tears streaming down her face. I grab her up and pull her into my chest.
“What the hell were you thinking!” I say, relieved to have her in my arms. “You were supposed to be with my mom!”
“I was with your mom, and she’s kind of a badass. She’s still in the car.”
“I guess that shouldn’t surprise me. She is a control freak.”
Her body trembles in my arms as she sobs. I wish more than anything that I could take away her pain.
“It was Luke!” she says between sniffles. “I swear, I had nothing to do with it.”
“I know. You don’t have to tell me that. God, Gracey—you could have been hurt!”
“Stopping Evil ALAN from accessing the internet was too important to just sit around and do nothing.”
I give her a forlorn smile, then lean down, planting a kiss on her lips. “Well, I’m glad you’re safe.”
“They’re going to kill him,” Grace chokes out. “You have to save Luke!”
“Grace, they’re not going to use lethal force unless he comes out armed. Trust me; they want him alive.”
