“Of all our interactions, the sex is potentially the least awkward we’ve had.”

There’s nothing easy about what I have to do. In fact, it’s damn near painful. Every part of me wants more of her, wants all of her.

“I get it.” She turns back around to clean the desktop again. “You can see yourself out.”

For a brief moment, I think about responding to her, but that would only make things more complicated. This is my out, and I should take it.

And I do.

“That man is scum!”Stephanie snorts, shoveling another spoonful of rocky road ice cream into her mouth.

“I hear Stacy is bragging about staying over at his house,” Carolyn cuts in. “She’s posting pictures from inside his hot tub.”

Stephanie shakes her head in disgust. “Kate deserves so much better.”

“Guys, I have to confess something,” I say sheepishly.

Two sets of eyes turn toward me.

“He came by my shop yesterday morning. He offered to buy up all my inventory if I spent the day with him.”

“What a piece of scum!” Carolyn seethes.

Stephanie’s brow narrows. “Wait a moment…you said no, right? That’s why Stacy is there.”

“Of course, I said no!”

“Phew!” my companions say in unison.

“But…I didn’t to the guy that came in after…”

Their faces contort in confusion.

“Did you get laid at the candy shop too?” Carolyn asks. “Should I be worried about eating stuff from there?”

“More importantly,” Stephanie cuts in, “was it with the asshole from next door?”

“Yes, in the candy shop. No, you have nothing to worry about. And yes, Michael’s dad.”

Stephanie dons a satisfied smirk. “He couldn’t resist the, what was it he called you, confectionary temptress?”

“Actually, he can. You see, he came over, gave me a face job, didn’t let me return the favor, then called everything off.”

Carolyn snickers. “That must have been one crusty muffin.”

Stephanie slaps her, but I decide it’s too funny not to chuckle at.

“Everything was good. He just said things were too complicated.”

“Well, your shops are next door from one another,” Stephanie says. “I guess I can see his point.”

“How much were you into this guy?” Carolyn asks.

“I should hate him after he publicly bashed my business, but I guess after talking with him a few times, it became water under the bridge. He isn’t a bad guy, and he really cares about his son.”

“You got attached, didn’t you?” Stephanie says in a concerned voice.
