I purr as I turn toward him, curling into his arms, fitting so perfectly, it’s like we were made for one another.

“I promise, I’ll never do anything to hurt Michael.”

“And I’ll never do anything to hurt you.”

Three MonthsLater

“Savage Sweets, how may I help you?” I say into the receiver.

“I’d like to order a cake. My son likes Toy Story.”

“You can place your order online. I usually need a five-day lead on specialty items.”

After rattling off my web address and saying goodbye, I put the phone down and turn back to Stephanie.

“I can’t believe you’re having a boy! This is so exciting!”

“I’m excited, Eric is ecstatic, but I can’t help but be a little annoyed that all of April’s old clothes are going to Goodwill. I could have saved a lot of money if little Andy was an Andrea.”

“I’ve already gotten like ten outfits! You’ll be fine.”

“So, are you at all nervous about tonight?” she asks.

“No. I talked it over with Principal Bailey, and she says everyone completely understands. I actually had to defend Colin, telling her he wasn’t the big asshole she thought he was.”

Steph shakes her head. “That last school board meeting was a doozy.”

“Yeah, but that was three months ago, and look what happened. Colin is a great guy, and he’s obsessed with me. We may have never found each other without that rocky start.”

Stephanie frowns. “I really like Colin…”

“But?”

“But it’s only been a couple of months, and you’re already so involved in each other’s lives.”

“I know it scares you. It scares me too,” I confess, hating that I hold any doubt of my future with Colin. “I love this man, and I know he feels the same way about me.”

“He really does adore you,” Stephanie relents. “Michael does too.”

“Colin’s said that if we ever get married, he wants Michael to be the best man.”

Stephanie quirks a brow. “He’s already talking about marriage?”

“He hasn’t had a girlfriend in seven years. This is a big deal for him. And for me too.”

Stephanie closes the distance between us, wrapping me in a hug. “Good for you.”

The door’s bell jingles, and in walks Colin.

“Thank you for agreeing to watch the shop,” I say as I walk over to plant a kiss on Colin’s cheek.

“Bring me back some tacos! You know what I like.”

Seated across from Lacy, I can’t help but stare at the beautiful contours of her heart-shaped face. Her perfect Cupid’s bow lips. Her ridiculously long lashes. Her button nose that scrunches when she takes offense.
