“…and I was able to negotiate your return back into the school,” Irene cuts in.

Okay, so the situation is still grossly terrible, but they at least have my attention.

“How?” I ask.

Irene continues with, “The cursing at the board meeting was a thin excuse to expel you. They actually justified it based on the fact that you sell candy, which admittedly lacks nutritional value, but I got the school board to allow you back on if twenty percent of your goods are considered healthy or sports-related, and Colin was right next to me during it all, and since he owns half the shop now, their hands were tied.”

“So, now when you set up your booth, you’re going to have homemade power bars next to your cake pops,” Colin says.

I know that they mean well, and this was done with my best interest in mind, but it feels like a slap in the face.

“Look, I appreciate what you’re trying to do, but Savage Sweets was mine. I made all the decisions and all the rules.”

“And you still will,” Colin assures me. “In fact, I’m so dedicated to your brand, look what I had made up.”

He hands me a shirt which reads:

Savage Might

Savage Mind

Savage Sweets

I feel my heart swell inside my chest.

“Whatever you want to do, Lacy, I’m on board. My gym is doing well, so I was allowed to take out additional loans. I’ve taken on all the risk. Let me make this up to you.” Colin gets down on one knee, holding up a ring box.

I look around at the room full of people. “Oh my god…”

“Lacy, will you marry me?”

“Yes!” I blurt out, hopping up and down excitedly.

He slips the ring on my finger, and April and Michael rush in to hug me.

“Baby sis! You finally found the one!” Stephanie enthuses.

“Oh, my God—you are in trouble, girl!” I say with a menacing glare.

“Me?” She points to herself innocently.

“Do you have any idea how upset I was?”

A PTA mom comes over with her Yeti mug full of wine. “Colin’s promised us a wine and cupcake pairing night!”

I look to him, wide-eyed and a little surprised. “I thought you didn’t drink or do candy. Publicly.”

“I thought maybe it was time I loosened up a little.”

I wrap my arms around his neck, staring up into his steel-blue eyes, and before our lips connect, he says, “I can’t wait to make you my wife.”

Lacy

“Cheers,”Michael says, raising his class after giving the most adorable speech a second grader could ever give.

This kid—he went all out, telling everyone how lucky Colin is to have me, going so far as to ask me in the middle if he could call me mom.

I said heck yeah! Then started bawling like a baby.
