A stab of jealousy threatens my good, level-headed sensibilities, which is insane. Lacy might be cute, but that’s the extent of her admirable qualities. She deserves the douche who’s drooling over her after what she last said to my son.

“I hadn’t seen you struggling,” the man says.

With him distracting her, she still hasn’t seen me, and I wonder if I should just slink away and go find the kids.

But my legs have completely betrayed me, and they stay rooted in place.

“Oh, well, Eric was here to help.”

The man points to a cluster of parents. “Eric is over there.”

Lacy finally turns to me, her eyes growing round with surprise.

“This is my sister Lacy,” Stephanie says dryly. “Lacy, this is Michael’s father, Colin.”

Lacy’s face contorts in horror. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

“Is that really language you should be using at a child’s birthday party?” I snicker. “Oh, I remember now. You’re the one who so eloquently said ass worms at the school board meeting.”

Stephanie’s eyes dart to Lacy. “You didn’t!”

“It was warranted,” the guy who is so obviously lusting after Lacy says.

“It’s fine, Donald.” Lacy refuses to meet my gaze, but she’s doesn’t seem interested in interacting with the douchebag either. “I’m gonna go wish my niece a happy birthday.”

As she rushes away, my eyes glue to her round backside because my body and brain are apparently not on speaking terms.

“How’s Kate?” Stephanie says to Donald, the man who was so eager to help Lacy.

“She’s fine. She decided to sit this one out,” he returns.

“You got yourself a good one,” Stephanie says with an edge.

I knew I was right about him being a douche.

Donald retreats to the mob of parents, but Stephanie stays, arms folded over her chest.

“Savage Sweets belonged to my parents, ya know.”

I inhale a breath and try to figure out a diplomatic way to say that her parents’ precious store has no business being on school grounds, but she turns and walks away before I can.

Of course Lacy is Stephanie’s sister, mother to the child that my son is trying to ‘get laid’ by.

Fuck.

Now, the women are looking at me differently, like I’m some kind of bully.

Except for the bubbly redhead, who blatantly licks her lips when I look in her direction.

Since when is trying to do right by children a bad thing?

Lacy is swinging with a group of girls while the boys play tag. Right about now, I’d be rushing after them, but the last thing I want to do is cause drama in front of the kids, and with Lacy’s ass worm comment at the school board meeting, who knows how she’ll act.

At least Michael seems to be having fun, though. For him, this is all worth it.

After the kids have played for twenty minutes, Stephanie calls them over for cake.

“Good idea,” one of the moms says. “They can stuff their faces then wash it all off in the lake.”
