“You know, Eric has a new coworker. He’s a little younger, maybe twenty-four, but he’s driven.”
“The last time Eric set me up with someone, you felt like shit when he cheated on me. You barely talked to me for a month after that.”
“I know! I just felt so terrible because you liked him so much.”
“It wasn’t your fault. I knew you had my best intentions in mind.”
Stephanie frowns, and I decide that of everyone I know, she would best understand my complicated situation.
I divert my eyes from hers. “There is a guy—”
“What?!?”
A knock sounds on the door and Carolyn lets herself in.
“Just here for the pizza and gossip,” she says, taking a slice and plopping down next to me. “What’d I miss?”
“Lacy was just about to tell me about a guy she met!”
Carolyn gasps. “Ya don’t say!”
“There is a person in my life.”
“Why haven’t you told me about this?” Carolyn asks accusatory.
“It’s very new.” I haven’t even told her who, yet, I can already feel her judgment.
Their eyes narrow in suspicion, but it’s Stephanie who speaks. “I’ve never heard you talk like this about a guy before. Like you’re ashamed or something.”
“It’s not something I’m altogether proud of.”
“You’re not fucking Donald—” Carolyn blurts out in disgust.
“You’re right, I’m not,” I snap. “I wouldn’t do that to Kate or her children.”
“If he’s not married, you have no reason to be ashamed. Is he a custodian? Because that’s fine, if he makes you happy,” Stephanie says.
“No! I wouldn’t look down on any man with a stable job and a kind heart at this point. If their cock was functional…”
Stephanie snorts with laughter. “It’s been a long time for you, huh?”
“Too fucking long, and it has me acting crazy.”
“Tell us, who is it?” Carolyn prods.
“Pour me a drink.”
“This is bad?” Stephanie gets up from her seat and pours me a fuzzy navel.
Half a glass later, I look up at my sister and friend and confess my treason. “I’m considering fucking Colin Davers.”
Their mouths hang slightly ajar. Stephanie’s probably considering having me committed.
Finally, Carolyn responds with, “Ummm…does he know this? Because I have a feeling he might have something to say about that.”
“He absolutely wants to fuck me, despite also possibly hating me. Which he claims not to. It’s gotten confusing.”
“I guess the big question is: how?” Stephanie asks.
