“I really did. I don’t know when it happened. Or how. But holy fuck, something about that man makes me scream and sing at the same time.”
Carolyn laughs. “So, he turns you into heavy metal.”
“Something like that.”
“Did you tell him how you feel?” Stephanie asks. “I mean, he might be over there feeling the same way about you.”
I snort. “Somehow, I doubt that.”
“Seriously. If he went over to your shop to give you a face job, it’s kind of obvious he didn’t intend to dump you,” Stephanie says.
My shoulders slump, and I exhale heavily. “I just want to forget about it.”
“No,” Stephanie insists. “Not until you ask him what’s up.”
“You think I should text him and demand to know why he won’t mess around with me anymore?”
“No. I think you should text him and tell him how you feel.”
“I don’t even know how I feel.”
Stephanie gives me a lopsided smile. “I think you do.”
I pull out my phone, trying to formulate the perfect text that’s inquisitive but not needy.
“Don’t think about it,” Carolyn says. “Just type.”
Lacy:I know that things got complicated between us, but to me, they weren’t complicated in a bad way. You’re the last person I should have feelings for, but for some reason, I can’t seem to get you out of my mind. I like you.
“Ohhhh—that’s perfect!” Stephanie says.
After I hit send, I notice that my hands are shaking, and my lungs have stopped working altogether.
I feel a hand on my shoulder and realize it’s Stephanie’s.
“You’re the hottest piece of ass in Wilson’s Grove,” she assures me, “but more than that, you’re an amazing person. He’ll see that.”
My phone vibrates, and I damn near drop it as I scramble to see what he’s written.
Colin:I like you too. Well, actually, it’s a little more than like. That’s the problem.
A little more than like? What the hell does that mean?
“Ohhhh! Looks like someone’s caught some feelings!” Carolyn teases.
“Play it cool,” Stephanie instructs.
Lacy:So, because you might more than like me, it has to end?
Colin:Since Michael’s birth, I haven’t dated. Not in the traditional sense. I’m worried that I’ll get involved with someone, and then they’ll leave. Or I’ll grow disenchanted. In the end, he’ll pay the price.
“What does he mean by since Michael’s birth? What’s the deal with this guy?” Carolyn asks with an upticked brow.
“I don’t know. He’s kind of a mystery,” I confess.
My thumbs fly to get up another text.
Lacy:No matter what happens between us, I’ll never take it out on Michael or try to hurt him in any way.
