I pull out my phone to send a text to Wes.
As angry and hurt as I am, he technically didn’t do anything wrong. We had a temporary ‘friends with benefits’ situation going on between us. Nothing more.
And then another dark thought enters my mind.
What if this wasn’t some new hookup? Weston isn’t going to entertain a new woman hours before our scheduled sexcapade. They must have some level of familiarity that I wasn’t aware of. Maybe that’s why Angela was so distraught when I confessed my feelings for him.
What if she also has feelings for him?
After composing a text, I hit send, hoping Wes doesn’t respond.
Jenna:I’m calling today off. It just wasn’t a good idea.
Less than a minute later, I receive a text.
Weston:Oh, bummer. Can we still hang out? I wanted to talk to you about something.
Bile fills my throat at the thought of him telling me he’s in love with Angela, which is a very real possibility. So I make up the boldest lie I can think of. One that should keep him away.
Jenna:I’ve met a man, and I don’t want to ruin it by continuing what we’re doing. I think we need to take a break. From everything.

“The Weinrock case—”
“Is going into settlement.” I place the file on Elliot’s desk.
“The Bakers?”
“Have given up their rights to lay claim. I’ll bring you the documents later.”
“Anything else on the back burners?”
“We’re doing good. There’s rumbling of a copyright issue brewing—a big one. We might want to keep our ears open.”
“I don’t understand it,” Elliot says. “You have an advanced degree in biology, and yet you decide entertainment law is your jive.”
“A friend of mine, Fiona Fables, recently went into pharmaceutical law, and let me tell you—it’s a snooze fest.”
“Fiona Fables? That name sounds familiar.”
“She married that Zevran Heartshire guy.”
“Oh, right.” Elliot’s face grows concerned. “So how are you? I’ve noticed you’ve been a little…off this week.”
You might as well tell him. He’s the only person you have left.
“I lost my two best friends last Saturday.”
His eyes widen in surprise. “Like, did they die?”
“Oh, no—it’s not that.”
“What happened?”
“Remember my days of banana fellating?”
He chuckles. “Who could forget?”
