“I offered to move Liz and her boyfriend away, to get her out of the path of temptation, but she refuses, and her boyfriend made a good point when he said a big change like that might make her turn to drugs as a coping mechanism.”

“Why haven’t you told Bailey this?”

“At first, it was because I was protecting a family secret. Now, I just don’t want her trying to contact her brother.”

“Do you think she could negotiate peace? Get him to lay off?”

I chuckle dryly. “Not with that lowlife. To tell you the truth, I don’t think he even cares about her.”

“Then what does he want from her?”

“I don’t know. He wouldn’t tell me.”

“Maybe now it’s time to level with him. See if he has anything that could help free her.”

“You can’t trust men like him.”

“But you can trust the corporate boards you’re used to dealing with?”

“Good point, although I will say that those boards do pay upward seven figures a hearing.”

“Just reach out to him.”

I pull out my phone and begin typing out a text.

Ashton:They took your sister in, claiming to have evidence against her. There will be a discovery hearing on Monday that will give me more information.

Caleb:She’s only being accused of stealing around five hundred thousand dollars. Can’t you just give that to the court and call it even?

Ashton:It’s not that simple. There are laws against that. I need to know if you can help her in any way.

Caleb:As a matter of fact, I can, but not until after I see her.

Ashton:If you have good evidence proving her innocent, I’ll pay you six figures if that’s what it takes.

Caleb:I’ll take you up on that, but first, I need to see my baby sis. I can’t go into jail because of my outstanding warrants.

Ashton:I can bring her a message.

Caleb:Alright, but no one sees it except my sis. You got that?

Ashton:Fine, drop it off at my office over the weekend. You better have something good.

“Well?”Mabel asks, craning her neck to see my phone.

“He might be able to help, but first, I have to deliver a message from him to Bailey.”

“Something tells me this can’t be good.”

“I have that exact feeling, but at this point, I have no choice. Whatever evidence they have on her must be profound if it warrants taking her back to jail.”

“Do you think there’s any chance she could be guilty?”

I shake my head. “No.”

“I agree.”

She downcast her eyes, anxious, and I know that whatever she’s about to say, I’m not going to like it.
