Tessa:No! He was an alien!
Ashley:Like a foreign national?
I almost laugh, because her logic makes sense, despite being so far off base.
Tessa:When I put the device on, it changed the scenery and it gave Atticus an alien ‘skin’, meaning he looked completely different. Light blue and shiny. He even had props he wore that looked real. Like horns. And gloves that were textured. It was literally like fucking an alien. Everything looked real, right down to the rock we were fucking on.
Ashley:No-fucking-way!
Tessa:It was insane. I was a stranded princess trying to fuck for gas, but he wasn’t about to let me leave.
Cindy:Holy shit! When do we get to try it out?
Ashley:Tell him I’ll pay top dollar to have an orgy with all my favorite characters in A Game of Thrones. I’ll unite the realm my damn self.
Tessa:Wow…I’m actually interested in seeing that.
Cindy:As soon as you lost your v-card, you turned into a horny perv. I like it.
Tessa:Like you two are any better. By the way, any action lately?
Ashley:So much action, but not worth talking about. I feel like I’m dumpster diving for dick.
I snort out a laugh.God, I love Ashley, and all of her quirks.
Cindy:Lots of action with one very special man, but I’m not ready to share the deets yet.
I frown.I love Cindy so much, and I’d hate to see her hurt again, as she so often is.
It would be easy if she were like Ashley, but she goes all in, and this has become a vicious cycle.
Still, I want her to find happiness, and silently pray that whatever guy she’s with isn’t a total douche.
Tessa:I pray for you Ashley. Every day. And Cindy, I can’t wait to hear all about your new guy. Until then, wish me luck.
My phone ringsand I look down to see that it’s Ashley calling.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“We’ve been friends for a long time, right?”
Suspicion needles me. “Yeah…”
“Then don’t hate me.”
“I don’t understand. Why would I hate you?”
“I’m the fun one that fucks without reservation. Cindy thinks she’s fucking for love, but she’s more like me than you. You’re all heart, and if you’re not careful, this is going to break you.”
Anger consumes me. What right does Ashley have to lecture me about what I can and cannot handle? Like this is any of her business.
But the truth is, she should be worried—Ishould be worried. I’m not like her or Cindy. Since I was a child, I’ve had my heart set on a happily ever after that was never within my grasp.
Sure, Cindy has her own romantic hopes and notions, but when she gets knocked down, she’s at it again before week’s end.
I may never recover from this.
“Thank you,” I finally manage to choke out. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
