“Relax, mama . . .” I kissed her temple. “Just remember, you brought this on yourself.”

Billie stared a hole into the side of my face as I kept my eyes ahead. This weekend getaway was for her to recenter and relax, but it looked like we were going to start the weekend with some discipline. Billie hated surprises, and every time I surprised her, it always started the same way.

Maybe this was her game, and she didn’t hate them after all.

“Rushindale, Texas.”

Seven years ago, this was where I met Truce.

I’d been out, minding my business, when this man, who towered over me, approached me trying to spit game. In the beginning, I paid that man absolutely no attention, but that didn’t stop his pursuit. One night, my girls and I decided we needed a break and found ourselves at a lounge to unwind after a busy week at work.

Somehow, in a room filled with people, Truce Maxwell managed to find his way to me.

“Do you believe in fate?”

I turned and came face-to-face with the stranger that had ruined sleep for me.

“I believe in God,” I stated simply. “I believe that what’s meant to be will be as long as it aligns with God’s will, . . . no matter what goals you have for your life.”

The handsome stranger smiled.

“I believe you’re meant to be mine . . . Let me buy you a drink.”

That night, Truce and I sat at the bar for hours just talking.

No topic had been off-limits, and it was the first night where I had felt seen for the first time in my life. For the first year of our relationship, we had a date at the place where we officially met, once a month,RTX Lux Spot. It was also where Truce proposed and where I told him I was pregnant with TJ. I wasn’t sure if the lounge was on our list of places to stop while we were in Rushindale, but I said a small prayer that it would be.

I snuggled closer to my husband as our driver cruised through streets that had changed drastically.

“What you over there smiling about?” Truce asked as he gripped my hand and brought it to his lips, giving me his full attention.

“Our first conversation atRTX Lux.”

Truce smirked and shook his head.

“That was not our first conversation. That was just the first time yo’ ass spoke back. I think before that night, we had run into each other at least five times. I told myself that if you played me after I approached you at the lounge, I’d leave you alone.” He looked at me with his left eyebrow raised. “You had me nervous. Until meeting you, all I had to do was smile at a woman, and she’d come running after me.”

I grinned and rolled my eyes.

He wasn’t lying. Truce was a tall glass of fine as fuck. My husband was six-three, broad shoulders, and beautiful brown skin. Early in our relationship, the attention he got would get under my skin, but now I got a kick out of watching women fawnover my husband. Truce never paid them any mind, but it was always entertaining.

I put my arm around his neck and pulled his face closer to mine.

“I love me some you. You know that?”

“I might have an idea.” He pecked my lips. “I’m glad you didn’t fight me on this impromptu vacation. I think I need it just as much as you do.”

“Same. There are a million things I need to be doing, but you usually know what you’re talking about, so . . .”

Truce licked his lips and smirked.

Our eyes locked, and I wasn’t surprised when he kissed me. I moaned into his mouth, loving the taste of him. Truce’s hand slipped under my shirt and up to my breasts.

I hissed and pulled away before the driver got more than he bargained for.

“Where you going?”

I looked at my husband, then the front seat.
