She blushed, lips parting just slightly, and I couldn’t resist trailing my hands over her curves, slow and deliberate.
“You’re so pretty,” I muttered, watching as she bit her lip playfully. Her hands slid up my chest, fingers lingering as she undid the buttons of my jacket one by one. When it slipped free, her hand found my necktie, tugging, loosening.
I thought for a moment, then killed the playful mood with a question that had been eating at me. “What do you do with your allowance?”
Like last time, her face shifted. Not guilty. Not ashamed. Just… guarded.
“Pay my bills,” she said, voice light, eyes on my tie instead of me.
“And you have bills that total over a hundred grand so far?” I pressed.
She nodded silently. Still no eye contact.
“Sometimes I buy myself things.” Her tone softened, like it was an admission.
I hummed, twirling a strand of her hair around my finger. “Like what?”
“Little things. Sometimes I buy clothes for dance or for… other reasons.” A sexy little spark lit in her gaze.
“What kind of reasons?” I asked, heat rising in my chest.
In an instant, her fist curled around my tie, yanking me down until our lips hovered a breath apart. My pulse spiked. Those siren eyes pinned me, daring me, mocking me, undoing me.
“It’s a secret,” she whispered, voice a purr. “But don’t worry. You’ll like it.”
Fuck. I internally groaned, jaw tight as we locked into another unspoken battle for dominance. She loved testing me, taking the reins, reminding me how easily she could unravel me. It wasadorable. Infuriating. Dangerous. Had Blaine Jr. standing right at fucking attention.
The elevator dinged, doors sliding open. And just like that, she let go with a giggle, pulling away. Her hips swayed with exaggerated purpose as she stepped out, every sway screaming,You’re not in control.
I swallowed my groan, dragging in a breath and forcing myself to walk after her, doing everything in my power to reel it in.
Chapter fourteen
Blaine
Stepping out of the elevator, I noticed my secretary wasn’t in and guided Sunshine straight into my office. Closing the door, silence wrapped around us as she drifted toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.
She stared out at the skyline, her usual playful edge dimming. And fuck me if I didn’t want to know what secrets she was keeping locked behind those big doe eyes.
“I wonder what it’s like… to have so much power. Control over the city and the people in it…” she whispered.
I moved closer, tilting my head. “It has its perks. But it’ll chew you alive and spit you out if you let it.”
“How do you cope?”
“Humor. Laugh off your everyday failures and it feels less heavy.”
Her lips curved. “But your jokes are terrible.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“Kidding,” she giggled, turning back to the glass.
Views like this were routine for me. So the only one I cared to look at… the only one that mattered… was her.
“So tell me about your traveling plans,” she started, and instantly my brain short-circuited. It jumped to the chance of running into Delilah and Brielle and the fact that Killian didn’t know or approve of Maia coming on this business trip. Small details, but still important. Actually, really fucking important.
Before I could answer, the faint ding of the elevator carried through. My head snapped toward the glass door just as my secretary greeted the man of my fucking nightmares.
