I shrugged. "I don't know."
"What are you talking about?" Momma questioned.
"Part of a body washed up on the shore of the Hudson River," I responded.
"What do we do?" Erin wondered.
I took a deep breath. "Nothing."
"Nothing?" she asked.
"We don't know who it is, and we did nothing wrong. I've already explained that. If it comes back that it's Frank or Saffron, then the detective should call you. You're the victim, baby."
"True."
* * *
While I kept telling Erin that I would be okay if it was Frank or Saffron's body, I truly didn't know if I would be. It had been a week with no further news. The ones responsible for everything Erin and the others went through were dead, and even if the body was Frank or Saffron, would the cops waste resources and funds to find a killer of an alleged—but known—mob boss?
Erin's phone lit up with an incoming call. When she showed me and Momma the screen, I knew we were going to get answers. The detective wouldn't call unless he had something.
"Hello?" she answered. She put it on speakerphone.
"Erin, Detective Allen in New York. How have you been doing?"
"I've been well. You?"
"Good." He paused. "So, I'm calling because I have news."
We waited with bated breath.
"Good news?" Erin asked.
"I suppose it's how you look at it."
"Oh?" Her brow furrowed. What news could he have other than he’d found the dead body of one or both of her captors?
"I don't know if you saw the news, but a body part washed up along the Hudson."
"I did see that. Was it …?"
"For the past week, we’ve had a dive team searching for more remains. We found some bones andtwoskulls."
"Okay?" she questioned hesitantly.
"Dental records have confirmed that the skulls are Frank and Saffron Russo."
Erin's eyes widened as she looked at me. I waved to her to continue the call. "What does that mean for what happened to me?"
"Well, there's no one to prosecute."
"So … it's over?"
"I know victims like to see their victimizers punished for their crimes, but in this case, that won't happen."
"What about the people who worked for Frank and Saffron?"
I wanted to cover Erin's mouth and ask her what she was doing, but I knew she was asking because she cared about me and what my fate would be.
