“Really?”

“Yeah, and since we’ll be together day in and day out, it will be easier.”

“So … how did that talk go?”

Luke sat beside me on the couch. “She’s pissed, but it’s done.”

“Yeah, I didn’t think she’d take it lightly.”

“She thinks you’re using me for my badge.”

“What?” I balked. “Are you serious?”

“I don’t understand why she thinks that.”

“That’s crazy, but you know I’m not, right?”

“How could you? My badge doesn’t come with special perks like a AAA membership.”

I snorted a laugh. “A AAA membership?”

Luke grinned. “You know, discounts at restaurants and hotel rooms.”

“And free towing?”

“Well, I would tow your car for you.” He winked.

“Let’s hope you never have to do that.”

“Yeah, so … you doing okay?” He squeezed my knee.

“Yeah, I’m doing all right. Just spoke to Emily and told her I’m here until we leave for Canada. We need to get you on the manifest for our flight.”

“All right. Cool. Do you think you’ll be okay here if I go into the station and talk to my captain?”

“I …” I hesitated for a moment. Would I be okay? It was daytime, and no one except Emily and Candace knew I was at Luke’s. “Do you think the guy is still in jail?”

“He’ll be in jail for a few days until his arraignment.”

“And then what?”

“That will be up to the DA if he wants to prosecute.”

“There’s a chance they won’t charge him?”

Luke shook his head. “Doubt it, since he was caught in the act.”

I’d never dealt with a district attorney before or had anything to do with the legal system, and I had no idea what would happen next. “Will I need to go to court?”

“Probably not.”

“Oh, that’s good.”

“Don’t worry about the legal shit. That guy will never hurt you again.”

I nodded.

“But if you want me to stay—”
