“So, do you want coffee?” he asked again.

“Well, since you’re offering.” I smirked.

While Luke put a pod in the Keurig and started my coffee, the timer on my phone went off. I swallowed, my heart suddenly beating rapidly. “Ready?”

“Yeah.” He beamed a genuine smile.

But wasIready? There was no one else in the entire world I wanted to have babies with, but being pregnant might put my career on hold. Whatever the test said, it was meant to be, and I decided as we walked to the bathroom that I would be okay with what it said.

Picking up the stick, I took a deep breath, then looked down.

There were two pink lines.

When I thoughtabout being a father, I’d always imagined Frankie as the mother. Or maybe that had been my little heart wishing it to come true, and somehow, it had. It felt surreal as I looked at the two pink lines on the test strip.

“Are you okay?” I asked Frankie, who was staring at the test in her hand.

She didn’t say anything.

“Isn’t there a chance it could be wrong?”

“It’s not wrong,” she whispered.

My heart stopped. Did she not want kids? We’d never talked about it. “Is … is that an issue?”

She turned and looked at me before giving me a small smile. “Only if you’re upset about it.”

I grabbed her hand and brought her against my chest. “When I told you I wanted to spend forever with you, I meant everything that comes our way. The good, the bad, and the babies.”

“But are we ready? We’re not even married yet.”

“Two people don’t need to be married to have a baby.”

“Clearly.” She chuckled.

“I just mean that if you’re pregnant, it’s meant to happen.”

“Right. I’m just in shock.”

“Me too,” I admitted, but I was used to being under pressure or having to think on the spot. “Everything will be fine.”

“I’ll probably have to postpone filming my next movie or get recast.”

“Can’t they angle the camera so your belly doesn’t show or something?”

“I think so.”

“Everything will work out. I promise.”

“Hope so.”

I shadowedFrankie as she had brunch with her friend Tori. The two were in a shopping center in Encino, eating at a table for two on the restaurant’s patio. Apparently, the place hadmore than waffles,as the name of the eatery suggested.
