“True, but that’s all I can do.”

“We need to get you a cookbook.” Luke pulled into the dimly lit parking lot. My car was the only one left.

“Oh, thank God,” I breathed. “That would’ve sucked if it had been towed.”

“We would’ve gotten it back.” He parked beside my car.

“Right.” I opened my door. “Come on, Amore.” He jumped out of the car after I moved the seat for him.

“I’ll follow you back,” Luke said.

Since I hadnothing in my fridge that would constitute breakfast, Luke and I ordered some to be delivered from my favorite diner. While we waited for it to arrive, we showered—separately. I still hadn’t heard from Nick, and oddly enough, I didn’t care. I preferred to be with Luke during the ordeal rather than Nick. Luke made me feel safe, and that was why I slept perfectly fine after we got back with my car. I knew if anyone were to break in, he would save me.

After we ate the late breakfast, we changed the codes for the alarm and gate.

“We should go buy cameras to put up,” Luke suggested as we sat at my kitchen island drinking water. “And get you the keyless locks.”

“Go buy?”

“Yeah, you know, at the store,” he teased.

I rolled my eyes slightly. “I mean, I didn’t know you could just go buy them. I thought it had to be through a company like I had to do for my alarm and gate.”

“There are definitely companies out there that can get cameras set up for you, but we don’t have that kind of time. The ones on the market aren’t bad, as long as you know what you’re doing and get enough for blind spots.”

“And you know what you’re doing?” I joked.

“Shouldn’t be too hard. The only issue is getting them hardwired and not on Wi-Fi. I think we can manage a few days with the Wi-Fi ones, and then on my next days off, I can set up hardwired ones. It might be expensive to get two things—”

“Money isn’t an issue, but why not only the Wi-Fi ones?”

“Just like locks, they’re hackable.”

“Right.” Thoughts of people looking into my cameras and watching me filtered through my mind. I wouldn’t want someone spying on me as I laid by my pool and soaked up the sun.

“I don’t like this,” I admitted, sighing.

He reached over and grabbed my hand. “Everything will be okay.”

“Promise?”

“Pinky swear.” He stuck out his little finger, and I hooked mine with his and shook. Making a pinky promise wasn’t new to us.

I looked over at Amore as he slept on his dog bed. “Is he going to be okay while we’re gone?”

“I don’t mind him coming along. We can place the order online and just go pick it up.”

When we arrivedat the electronics store, the employee came out with our items, and we left. Afterward, we headed to Luke’s apartment for him to get a change of clothes and whatever he would need for his shift.

While he was getting his things, I let Amore out of the car to use the bathroom. A woman stepped out of a white Camaro and gave me a small smile as I stood on the grass near the stairs. She went up to Luke’s apartment and knocked.

I didn’t have to wonder who she was for long.

When he opened the door, I heard him say, “Candace, what are you doing here?”
