It felt almost like déjà vu as I answered, and it was on the tip of my tongue to tell him it could be Candace because she was pissed about our breakup and me being with Frankie, but that would open a whole other can of worms since our relationship was a secret. And even though the world only speculated Frankie Borelli was dating her bodyguard, I had to tell the officer because if it was the man out on bail, they needed the lead.

“Frankie stayed with me after her home was broken into twice and she was attacked. It’s possible her attacker followed us from her place to mine once he got out on bail. I would start with him.”

“All right. I’ll pull the file and have a chat with him. When do you come back to LA?”

“Two weeks if everything goes as planned with my client.” After filming was over, we were heading to LA for a few days before going to Kansas for Lucy’s baby shower.

“Are you concerned at all about items missing?” he asked.

“From what Arnold described, it didn’t appear to be a robbery.”

“I would agree with that,” the detective confirmed. “There didn’t appear to be any forced entry, but I would suggest changing your locks and looking for anyone following you.”

“I’ll have the apartment manager change the locks,” I replied. My lease was month to month, and given Frankie had no house to go home to because it was on the market, and now my apartment was compromised, I didn’t think we’d spend another night in it.

“If something does come up missing, we can add it to the report.”

“Thank you.”

“Okay. I’ll keep you updated if I find anything out.”

“Thank you.”

We hung up, and I took a deep breath before going back into Frankie’s trailer. I knew I had to tell her what was happening, not only because she was my girlfriend but because I was hired to protect her, and she had a right to know.

“Everything okay?” she asked as I stepped inside.

I sat at the table across from her, not touching my turkey sandwich. “There’s no cause for alarm with what I’m about to tell you, okay?”

She set her sandwich down and crossed her arms. “You’re scaring me.”

I reached across the small table and grabbed her hand. “That’s what I’m saying. You don’t need to be worried.”

“Okay?” she questioned timidly.

I swallowed. “Someone broke into my apartment.”

Frankie’s brown eyes widened. “Are you serious?”

I nodded. “Yeah, but—”

“Who was it?”

“We don’t know.”

“Was it Clark?” she asked, referring to the man who attacked her.

I shook my head and said again, “We don’t know.”

“What did they take?”

“As far as I know, nothing, but I can’t be certain until I get home.”

“Did … Did they leave anything?”

I nodded, hating what I had to tell her next. “Yes. Red roses with a picture of us and a knife through it.”

She stared at me, not saying anything.
