I took a deep breath. “We aren’t sure, but again, a lot is going on with my girlfriend.”
“Could it be the man who attacked her?” he asked. It was no secret Frankie was attacked and almost raped since Candace had leaked the story.
“Possibly.”
“That’s crazy and must be scary.”
“Yeah.” My lips formed a thin line. “But we’re going to get through this.”
“Do you know where you’ll live?”
“Not at the moment.”
“I’ll need your forwarding address to return your security deposit.”
“Right.” I nodded. “I will hopefully know in a few weeks.”
“All right, just let me know.”
“I will. Thanks again.” I held up the keys and then left his office.
Once I got up to my apartment, I looked at the door jamb, but since the locks had been changed, I was unable to see if there were any new scratches. It didn’t matter since I was told there had been no forced entry.
Sticking the key into the lock, I opened the door and stepped inside. Everything appeared to be as we had left it, but I went around to make sure nothing was stolen. It appeared nothing was missing until I unlocked my gun safe only to find it empty.
I sucked in a breath, and my heart started to race. “What the fuck?” No one knew the code except me. It wasn’t written anywhere and was only in my head.
“Shit!” I roared, my head spinning.
How was it possible? I paced as everything ran through my head. If it was Clark, there was absolutely no way he could get into my safe, but then again, he worked in security, so he could have a device that would break into my safe. Was it Candace? Did she somehow know my code? She was sometimes in the same room as me when I’d put my gun away or taken it out, so it might be possible, but I couldn’t remember her ever being nearby when I’d entered the code.
Having my personal gun stolen wasn’t as bad as my LAPD-issued service weapon, but since it had been taken too, I was fucked. I had only been with the LAPD for a few years, and I knew it wouldn’t go over well.
I pulled out my cell and called Frankie. “Hey,” she answered.
“Hey, so …” I hesitated, taking a deep breath.
“Everything okay?”
“No.” I shook my head. “The person who broke in somehow got into my gun safe and took both of my guns.”
“Oh my god,” she gasped. “How?”
“I don’t know. The lock wasn’t broken or anything.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I need to report it to my captain before he leaves for the day. Will you be okay?”
“I think so. Amore and I are just watching TV in the bedroom. All the doors are locked, plus, you know, the community is gated.”
Being in a gated community wasn’t one hundred percent safe, but I wasn’t going to tell her that. “All right. I’m sorry. I thought I would just come check it out and get my car.”
“I understand. I eventually have to learn to be alone again.”
“I know, but I was hoping you wouldn’t have to until after we found out who broke into my place and once Clark is in prison and not out on bail.”
“Yeah.” She blew out a breath.
