“New York City?”
“Yep. It’s loud all the time and not like living out here on the farm.”
“I bet,” I agreed.
“My aunt said you live in Houston?”
“Yeah, it’s the city, but not like New York I’m guessing. Our neighborhood is quiet.”
“I don’t think any place is like New York City.”
I shrugged because I had no clue and moved a little closer to her. “Probably”
“Any plans for college?”
“Just a community one in Houston.”
“Didn’t your whole family go to A&M?”
I sighed. “Yeah.”
“And you don’t want to follow in their footsteps?” she asked, adjusting her body to fit with a jet.
“I think I would have if I weren’t playing second fiddle to my brother.”
“What do you mean?”
I took a deep breath. “He’s perfect, and I’m … Well, I’m not.”
“But you could be if you tried, right?”
“Honestly, I don’t think I’m the worst child there is. Sure, I got pulled over for drinking and driving, and I was underage, but so was everyone at the party I was at. That’s what you do Friday and Saturday nights with your friends.”
“I get it,” she agreed. “My parents want me to be a lawyer like them.”
“And you don’t want to be?” Sarah seemed smart, so I’d bet she could become a lawyer.
She shook her head slightly. “I want to be a veterinarian.”
“So do it. Do what will make you happy and not your parents.”
She thought for a moment and then sighed. “Yeah, I’m still thinking about it. I decided to take the summer and then make my decision once school starts again.”
“I think that’s a great plan. Do you like New York City? I’ve never been.”
“I like the fact that, if I’m studying late at night, I can still get a late night snack no matter what time it is, and there’s always something to do like see a play or go for a run in Central Park.”
“Studying late at night? You mean grabbing a bite to eat after you’re drunk at a party, right?”
Sarah laughed, throwing her head back. She really was cute. Like girl next door cute. “There have been a few parties in my day.”
“Mine too.” I smirked.
“So I’ve heard.”
“What else have you heard?” I moved one jet closer to her.
“Nothing much other than you got in trouble for drinking and driving and will be helping out around here this summer.”
