I shook my head. “Nah. I would steal snacks from the breakroom, though.” We both chuckled. “But I’m not really looking to practice criminal law like he did.”

“What do you want to do?”

“Civil rights.”

Rhett nodded slowly. “I can see you doing that.”

“Are you going to come with me to work too?” I smirked.

He grunted a small laugh. “Pretty much.”

“My co-workers and clients are going to love me,” I jested.

“They’ll feel safe having you as their attorney.”

I lifted a shoulder. “I guess.”

“Do you think you’ll follow in your father’s footsteps?”

I arched a brow. “What do you mean?”

“Running for president someday.”

“Ahh …” I hesitated. “No, don’t think so.”

“Why not?”

“As much as politics have been a part of my life, they aren’t really my thing.”

“Who knows? Maybe that will change. I can see you doing it and fighting for the people.”

“Thanks.” I smiled warmly. “Guess we’ll see what happens, but I’m not sure how the United States would feel about a gay president.”

“We won’t know until a gay candidate runs, right?”

“Right.” I blew out a breath. I wasn’t considering running for president, but maybe I’d change my mind in the future. “At least I’ll be used to having the Secret Service around by then. I’ll make sure you’re my lead. You can sneak into the Residence each night.”

“By then, I probably won’t be working on protective missions.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.” He nodded. “Agents typically only serve on this kind of detail for about six years before we get burnt out. It’s hard working so many hours and not being with family, you know?”

“I do.” I frowned. I knew he wasn’t able to see his daughter often, but the sadness in his eyes was hitting me hard.

Rhett continued to play with my fingers lazily as he spoke. “I want to help Poppy with her homework, attend her school plays, watch her play sports or dance ballet or whatever she decides she wants to do. I want to spend holidays and birthdays and graduations with her.”

I leaned over and wrapped him in my arms. “You will. Even now. Let’s make it happen.”

“How?”

I pulled back and cupped his cheek. “I guess the easiest is if I had a bond with Poppy and that way, it’s not suspicious when I want to join you at those things. I already want to get to know her better, since she’s your daughter.”

“Oh, yeah?” He arched a brow.

“Of course, I do. She’s your kid, and you’re my boyfriend.”

“Okay, but like when we try to be together, how are you going to do that without the other agents being skeptical?”
