“I will.”
He leaned in and we kissed briefly. Damn. I’d really missed his lips.
“Text me whatever time,” I said as he grabbed his duffle from the backseat and then opened the door.
“Okay.”
I watched him walk inside the building before I headed toward my parents’ house. The porch light was on as I pulled up and then cut the engine. I had texted them too that I was on my way because of Ford and his grandpa. Not having anything with me, I climbed out of the cab and headed to the front door. It swung open before I could use my key and my mother stood before me.
“What are you doing awake?” I asked her.
“I couldn’t sleep knowing you were on the road.”
“Ah.”
I stepped inside and she shut and locked the door behind us.
“How’s Ford’s grandfather?”
“He’s waiting to have bypass surgery.”
“Oh no.”
I nodded. “Yeah. Hope he’ll be okay.”
Mom rubbed my back. “Me too. Why don’t you get some sleep?”
“Yeah. I need a toothbrush too.”
“There’s one in the hall closet upstairs.”
“Thanks.”
“Does this mean you two are back together?” she asked as I headed toward the stairs.
I smiled, my heart feeling whole once again. “Yeah, we are.”
A few hours later,I woke to my phone pinging with a text message. When I grabbed it off the nightstand, I saw it was from Ford.
Grandpa is having surgery at 10. They said it can take 3 to 6 hours. If you want to do breakfast, I’m ready when you are. We’re still at the hospital
I glanced at the time and saw it was just after nine-thirty. I got about seven hours of sleep and I’d wondered if Ford got any since he was still at the hospital.
Yeah. Let me shower real quick and then I’ll be on my way
Ok
I did just that and changed into a long-sleeved T-shirt and joggers I had in a drawer in my room. Thankfully, since I spent a few weeks in the summer each year at my folks’ place, I had extra clothes. I also grabbed a Bruins baseball cap off my dresser and put it on backward before heading downstairs.
My parents were in the kitchen drinking coffee.
“Heading to breakfast with Ford and then back to Boston. Thanks for letting me crash for the night.” I kissed Mom’s cheek and then squeezed my father’s shoulder.
“Good luck tonight,” Mom said. “And no fighting.”
I chuckled. “You know, I just did that the other game because the guys needed to get their heads out of their asses and win the game.”
“Harrison had it coming,” Dad stated. He knew what was up.
