JP walked past us and then we entered the restaurant.
“That seemed to go well,” Ford stated.
“Yeah, I think so. I’ll call him on the way home to make sure.”
JP had been my best friend for almost my entire life. Over the last few years, we hadn’t been as close considering I had moved to Boston, but I had to hope that no matter what, everything would be okay between us.

My grandfather madeit through surgery and would be in the hospital for a week while he recovered. It turned out he’d been experiencing some issues for the past few months but was too stubborn to go to the doctor. He even admitted he’d been feeling dizzy before the fall when he’d broken his leg. He was extremely lucky the paramedics had gotten to him as quickly as they had. Now his doctors were confident he’d make a full recovery.
The day after his surgery, my mom and I spent the morning at the hospital, before running some errands and going grocery shopping for my grandma. After talking things over with her, we all decided my mom and I would return to Boston while my dad stayed behind to help. It was a good thing since I had no other way back home.
“You ready to leave?” Mom asked from the doorway of the guest bedroom at my grandparents’ house.
“Yeah.” I picked up my duffel bag and grabbed my phone and charger from the nightstand.
We swung by the hospital to say goodbye to everyone before we got on the road. Since Grandpa was in the ICU, only one of us could be in his room at a time. I went first, and then Mom took her turn. While she was visiting Grandpa, I took the opportunity to text Coop.
My mom and I are leaving soon. Do you want to get together tonight?
It only took a few seconds for him to respond.
Of course. Do you want to go out for dinner or eat at my place?
Before I could text back, my mom came into view and said, “All right, let’s go.”
I hugged my grandma. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
“That will be fine, sweetie.”
Once we were in the car, I pulled out my phone to text Coop back.
Dinner in sounds good. Do you want me to pick something up on my way over?
No. Just come over as soon as you can, and I’ll take care of everything else
You’re the best ??
“What’s got you smiling?”
I looked at my mom. “I’m not smiling.”
“Sweetie, you can’t lie to your mother.” She smirked.
“Fine,” I huffed playfully, but the truth was I was excited to share this news with her. “You remember me telling you about that guy I was seeing before I moved to London?” She nodded. “Well, we just got back together when he drove me up here on Friday.”
“Aww, I’m happy for you.”
“Thanks. I think things might work out this time.”
“So, does that mean your dad and I will get to meet him?”
I snorted a laugh. “Probably. However, we’ll have to plan something around his schedule. He travels a lot for work.”
“What does he do?” she asked.
