Since I was no longer embarrassed by what had happened, and I was actually proud of the work I’d been doing, I happily shared what my sessions entailed.
“It was fine. We actually talked about Tyler and Hayden.” I got a couple bottles of water.
“Really?”
“Yeah.” I grabbed my food while I spoke. “I think it’s time I finally reach out and at least try to apologize for my actions. With us back together, I don’t want you to feel like you’re stuck in the middle.”
“You don’t need to worry about me.” We walked into the living room. “I can handle things with Hayden.”
We sat next to each other on my couch. “I know you can, but talking to them isn’t just about what happened when I found out he was dating Tyler. I also need to address the things that went down between Tyler and me before that.”
“Did she give you any advice on how you should go about doing that?”
I took a bite of pizza and swallowed before answering. “Yeah. She thinks I should ask to meet in person and just speak from the heart.”
“Is that what you want to do?”
“I think so, but …” I took a deep breath. “If they agree to meet up, will you go with me?”
“Of course.” He twisted his plastic bottle open and took a sip of water. “But there’s something I need to tell you first.”
“Okay?” My mind started to race with ideas of what he possibly needed to say because those words never proceeded anything good.
“Hayden called me yesterday. He and Tyler are getting married in six weeks?—”
“What?” My eyes widened. “They’re getting married? I had no idea.”
“Yeah,” he muttered. “So, maybe talking to them right now isn’t the best idea.”
It didn’t matter that Tyler was engaged because I was over him. “You think I should wait until after the wedding?”
Coop picked at his pizza and shrugged. “Maybe …”
“Why?”
“It’s just when Hayden told me he was engaged, he asked me to be his best man.”
That wasn’t a surprise. “Okay?”
“At the time, he thought we were back together.”
My brows furrowed. “When was this?”
“About a week after”—he grimaced—“you were in the hospital.”
“Why did he think we were back together?”
Coop laid his hand over mine and squeezed it. “He saw how worried I was about you. I think he realized then that I still had feelings for you and thought we were on track to start dating again.”
“He was probably relieved when you told him that wasn’t the case,” I joked, even though it was likely true.
“I don’t know.” He shrugged. “Anyway, before I could explain the situation, he said it would be best if you didn’t go as my date.”
“Did he think you’d actually take me?” I didn’t think any of us would think that was a good idea.
He shook his head. “I don’t know. He must have thought there was a chance if he brought it up.”
“Even if things were chill between all of us, I think it would be weird for everyone if I were there since I’d dated one of the grooms.”
