“That they do,” I agreed.

Eventually, Fallon and Rhett were introduced and took their seats at the head table with Fallon’s best man, Tyler Statler-Foster, and Rhett’s best man, fellow Secret Service agent Collin Day.

Dinner was served, and the drinks continued to flow. Every once in a while, my eyes would find Declan at the table with his friends. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves, and it appeared they were well on their way to being drunk.

After the grooms shared their first dance and then did the mother and son dance, Mary came over to me with a beautiful woman at her side.

“Hi, Sean. Are you having a good time?”

I stood and hugged my friend. “I am. You did an amazing job with this wedding.”

“Thank you.” She beamed and then turned slightly toward the woman standing next to her. “Have you met my communications director, Jessica?”

“I don’t believe I have.” I offered my hand in greeting. “Nice to meet you.”

Jessica reached out, and we shook. “It’s nice to meet you too.”

“Sean and Patrick started a law firm together twenty years ago and have been friends even longer,” Mary explained. “Oh, would you look at that? It looks like the wedding planner needs something. You two should dance until I come back.”

I glared playfully at my friend before she rushed off to the other side of the tent.

“Oh wow, this is embarrassing,” Jessica muttered. “Mary’s not getting any points for subtlety, is she?

“Probably not, but she means well.” I laughed. “Besides, I like to dance.”

“Me too,” she replied.

I led Jessica to the dance floor, where we stayed for a few songs before the DJ announced that Rhett and Fallon would cut the cake. While everyone gathered around the couple, my phone buzzed in my pocket. When I pulled it out, I saw a text from Declan. My eyebrows knitted in confusion. We’d only texted about the Whitman case before, so why was he texting instead of coming over to talk to me? Swiping the screen, I opened the message.

OMG Sam! This wedding is wild. Bossman is here and looking fucking delicious tonight *peach emoji* *eggplant emoji* *tongue emoji* Also some guy I hooked up with over a year ago is here. I’ve spent the entire reception avoiding him. FML

I had so many questions. Who was Sam? Who was the guy he hooked up with? And why was I a topic of conversation? Although I could admit I was somewhat flattered that someone thought I lookeddelicious,as he so eloquently put it, I didn’t know how to handle the situation. Was I supposed to respond so he would know he sent the text to the wrong person? Or would it be better if I disregarded it altogether?

Ignoring it sounded like the better of the two options. With any luck, he wouldn’t figure it out since he was probably drunk, and it would save us both a lot of embarrassment.

I shoved the phone back in my pocket and joined the crowd just in time to watch the happy couple feed each other a piece of wedding cake. Jessica and I danced some more, and then she rejoined some of the White House staffers as they called it a night.

Eventually, more guests began to leave, and I searched for Ryan and Morgan.

“Are you two ready to head back to the hotel?” I asked as I approached them at the table they were sitting at.

“I’m going to stay here with Faye,” Morgan said.

Ryan was focused on his phone but still managed to say, “I’m ready whenever you are.”

“All right. Let’s go. I’ll pick you up tomorrow, sweetie.” I kissed my daughter’s cheek.

“Night, Dad.”

As Ryan and I made our way out of the reception tent, I stopped to say goodnight to Patrick and Mary.

“Are you guys leaving?” Patrick asked, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

“Yeah, but we had a great time. Even if your wife tried to set me up.” I smiled at Mary so she’d know I was teasing.

She gasped, clutching her chest as though she was offended. “I did no such thing. You guys live too far apart, anyway. I just wanted you to have some fun tonight.”

“Well, mission accomplished.” I kissed her on the cheek.
