I leaned in a bit closer, our faces just inches apart. “Do you know how to handle it?”

His warm breath grazed my ear as he said, “Guess you'll have to find out.”

“Then let’s see what you’ve got.” I held out my hand and he took it. Guiding him a few feet to the dance floor, we began to move with the rhythm, our bodies swaying in sync. The heat between us was palpable, the tension building with every passing second. We hadn’t told each other our names and I was totally cool with that because I really didn’t need to know his name when all I wanted to do was fuck him.

After a few songs, he said into my ear, “My place isn’t too far from here. Wanna join me?”

I smirked. “Lead the way, stranger.”

DECLAN

A Year and a Half Later– Present Day

Walking into Ashford,Nolan & Torrance, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement because I could see my career goals within reach.

I had spent the previous summer between my second and third year of law school interning at the criminal defense firm and was looking forward to working as a law clerk and then a junior associate once I passed the bar in a few months. I really loved working for ANT, and my boss, Sean Ashford, was one sexy man for someone twice my age. Having him to admire each day was an added perk.

Navigating through the maze of cubicles, I exchanged greetings with familiar faces. Camille, the paralegal I’d become friendly with when I was an intern, greeted me with a smile.

“Hey, Camille! Long time no see,” I called out.

“Hey, Declan! It’s good to see you again. Are you back for good?”

“Hope so.” I beamed and leaned against the entry of her cubicle. “Anything new to report since I left?”

It had been almost nine months since my last day, and I knew a lot could change in that amount of time. Plus, some sort of gossip was always going around and I was here for it.

She chuckled. “Oh, Declan, you have no idea what you’ve missed. This place puts the most outrageous lawyer dramas on TV to shame.”

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Spill the tea, girl.”

She leaned in conspiratorially, her voice dropping to a hushed tone. “Remember Amy from billing? Well, rumor has it she’s been having secret rendezvous with the new hotshot from investigations. And get this, they’ve been using the storage room on the eighth floor as their hook up spot!”

I gasped, playing along with her scandalous tone. “No way! Amy, the quiet and shy one, and a new investigator? That’s juicy.”

She nodded, enjoying the gossip session. “But wait, there’s more. Remember Emily, Luke’s new paralegal who everyone had a thing for last summer?”

Everyone but me because I didn’t bat for that team. “Yeah, what about her?”

She grinned, reveling in the sizzling details. “Well, word on the office grapevine is that she and Luke have been spotted leaving fancy restaurants together, and others swear they saw them holding hands in the elevator.”

My jaw dropped because Luke Nolan was a partner. “Luke Nolan and Emily? That’s unexpected. I thought he was married.”

Camille’s eyes widened as she nodded with a huge smirk on her face. “He is.”

“Nooooo,” I breathed.

“But you didn’t hear any of that from me.” She winked.

I shook my head in disbelief. “This place is crazier than I remember. I thought I was coming back to a normal law firm.”

She laughed. “Normal is overrated, Declan. Welcome to the real-life legal drama. Buckle up; it’s going to be a wild ride.”

I said goodbye to Camille before we both got into trouble. Not wanting to leave out the man who had hired me and the one I looked up to, I reached the corner office and knocked lightly on the open door.

“Good morning, boss. Great to see you again,” I announced, my voice filled with genuine warmth.
